Cadillac is working on a more advanced XT5 for China. It will offer a lidar-based autonomous driving system. Model will have a 1.5-liter turbo with two electric motors. Cadillac introduced the redesigned XT5 in China nearly two years ago, but the lineup is now expanding to include an eco-friendly variant. It was recently revealed by the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and is a far cry from the aging dinosaur offered stateside. On the styling front, there isn’t much to report as the model closely echoes its more traditional counterpart. However, it appears the crossover will adopt a lightly revised grille that features illuminated accents. This would bring it closer in line with the company’s extensive lineup of EVs. This should help to improve efficiency when the vehicle is running on electricity alone. The changes continue out back, where the crossover has been equipped with a new bumper that lacks exhaust cut outs. This gives the rear end a streamlined design that mimics the company’s electric vehicles. More interestingly, some variants will come equipped with an advanced semi-autonomous driving system. These versions can easily be identified by the roof-mounted Lidar sensor and new cameras (or other sensors) mounted on the front fenders. The crossover is expected to have a Xiao Yao Zhi Xing system, which was jointly developed with Momenta. We’ve already seen the system on Chinese Buicks and it’s essentially Super Duper Cruise as it allows for “seamless navigation through city roads, handling scenarios such as cut-ins, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, and lane changes.” Powertrain details are murky, but the MIIT listing says the XT5 will have a 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) engine, a lithium-ion battery, and two electric motors. The latter have peak outputs of 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) front and 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) rear. That setup sounds like a range-extended EV, but the model is reportedly a plug-in hybrid. For comparison, the regular XT5 has a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with mild-hybrid technology. It produces 233 hp (174 kW / 237 PS) and 258 lb-ft (350 Nm) of torque. The engine is paired to a nine-speed automatic transmission, which enables the crossover to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in as little as eight seconds before hitting a top speed of 130 mph (210 km/h).
