Cold starting engines generally results in some pretty sensational noises, especially when those engines are big old V8s in classic muscle machines and trucks. Here we have a small selection of some serious cold starts featuring old Dodge V8 engines. These engines offer immense displacement and take a lot of oomph to get started in the cold, but once they get going the sounds are worth it. Plymouth Cuda Cold Start Starting with the Cuda, you can hear how hard these old Mopar starter motors have to work to get big engines turned over in the winter. Once the reciprocating electric whine of the starter gives way to the Cuda's engine roaring to life, the big mill sounds like a giant gargling rocks, thanks to the Plymouth's aftermarket Mopar 284/.484 cam. Cams made for making power higher up in the rev range without variable valve timing will often 'lope' at idle or low engine speeds, which produces that sound as the engine isn't running at its ideal RPM. The lope is a traditional sign of high performance, despite it not being required in modern builds with VVTI-equipped engines. Dodge Challenger Cold Start Dylan McCool This old Challenger is also a bit of a tough customer to start after multiple cold weeks, especially as a massive 440 big block now resides under the hood. That said, once the engine is running, it smooths out over time, as it likely has a more subtle cam than its Plymouth sibling. Old cars require a lot more care and maintenance, but for some, that's part of the fun. 1970 Plymouth Barracuda 426 Specs
