In addition to the restyled and upgraded 2028 XC40, the brand is treating its bread-and-butter XC60 to a substantial update. While the bullet points are similar to its little brother-more standard kit, tweaked looks inside and out, better safety-the headline news is a massive upgrade to the plug-in hybrid T8 model, which more than doubles its all-electric range.2028 volvo xc60 doubles phev range along with style upgrade, Image Kyle PatrickImage: Kyle PatrickPlug-In PowerVolvo was one of the first brands to truly embrace plug-in hybrid technology, making the T8 powertrain the flagship of its 60- and 90-series models. The 2028 models see the most dramatic change to the setup, with a huge capacity increase to 37.9 kilowatt-hours (usable). This increase has forced a move of the battery pack from the center tunnel to the floor, which is a double-edged sword.AdvertisementAdvertisementOn one hand, second-row passengers now get slightly less legroom than before. Drivers might not hear them complain much, since the move allows for the four-zone automatic climate control found in mild-hybrid models to now be specced on the T8. So there's that.Numbers-wise, total system horsepower has remained level with 2026, at 455 hp. A more powerful electric motor means total twist is up, now peaking at 560 pound-feet of torque. Volvo says the more powerful electric motor will also let drivers spend more time driving on just electric power, well up to any legal highway speeds in North America.Just how far will the XC60 go? Strictly on electricity, the current EPA estimate is 78 miles (126 kilometers), which is over double the current model and a new benchmark for PHEVs in the luxury SUV scene. The XC90-which saw its own significant style upgrade last year-will receive the same setup, though being larger and heavier, it sees a limit of 73 mi (117 km). Factor the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine back in and total range is estimated to be a massive 590 mi (950 km). Best of all, Volvo says a complete recharge of the pack via a Level 2 charger should clock in under six hours.2028 volvo xc60 doubles phev range along with style upgrade, Image Kyle PatrickImage: Kyle PatrickUpgraded TechLook beyond the PHEV news, and the XC60 upgrades become much more familiar. The 11.2-inch touchscreen - which debuted on this year's model - remains, running the latest version of Volvo's infotainment system, including the Google Gemini AI voice assistant.AdvertisementAdvertisementVolvo has also upgraded the sensors, radar, and external cameras for what it says is more natural and accurate operation from the various safety assists. The upgrade unlocks a safe-exit assist as well as a 3D "look around" feature for the 360-degree camera. Volvo's Pilot Assist system now also features a lane change assist.2028 volvo xc60 doubles phev range along with style upgrade, Image Kyle PatrickImage: Kyle PatrickPolished LooksEven though it had a mild visual upgrade for this year, Volvo has put the XC60 back under the knife for these latest upgrades. It's typically subtle stuff, with the most obvious change being the reshaped headlights and thinner grille. The former features a simplified version of the Thor's Hammer LED light signature, while the latter incorporates diagonal elements to reinforce the motion found within Volvo's logo. There are additional tweaks to the bumper designs front and rear, as well as the lighting signature in the traditional tall taillights. New wheel designs round out the look, while a gorgeous Heather Bronze paint serves as the hero hue for '28.The cabin is another familiar tale from the XC40, with the same new Cardamom color on offer for the leather seats. Here, they can be had in Nappa leather, however, which includes perforation for the (front-seat) ventilation. Volvo has paired the new thrones with a corresponding warm wood trim on the redesigned dashboard, which uses a combination of concave surfaces and hidden LEDs for a calmer approach to ambient lighting. (Take note, Merc.) The door panels have also been redesigned. Some things are sacred, mind you: the excellent Bowers & Wilkins sound system remains optional, as does the Orrefors crystal shifter.2028 volvo xc60 doubles phev range along with style upgrade, Image Kyle PatrickImage: Kyle PatrickAutoGuide's TakeThe XC60 (and XC90, for that matter) remains a solid choice in a competitive segment. While Volvo doesn't have the cutting-edge feel of BMW or the wow-factor of Mercedes-Benz, there's a cohesiveness that remains appealing. It's almost as if these vehicles hail from a country known for timeless design…AdvertisementAdvertisementWhat will be interesting is just how Volvo prices the T8 models once they arrive at US and Canadian dealerships in early 2027. The current plug-in XC60 is essentially at price parity with the all-electric EX60; if the bigger battery pack significantly inflates the price, buyers might just find the EV the more affordable option.Become an AutoGuide insider.
