When you think of the complexity of car repair, you’re most likely thinking of the advancement of technology used in vehicles. Things like engine or transmission repairs, module reprogramming, automatic system calibrations, and more. According to one Texas woman, however, a simple tire change in her vehicle left several mechanics scratching their heads. Now she’s asking viewers how to handle the situation. What Went Wrong With The Tire Change? In a storytime video that has garnered over 625 views, TikTok creator Ducky (@duckyprintss) shared the unusual problem she encountered while trying to replace two worn tires on her vehicle. "I am on a struggle bus right now, y'all," she says. "I need to get my tires changed, and nobody can take the lug nuts off of my tires." According to Ducky, her first stop was Walmart, where technicians attempted to remove the lug nuts but couldn’t loosen them. "Walmart said that they could not get it undone no matter what," she says. Workers then suggested she try a tire specialist instead, so she brought the vehicle to Discount Tire. "They were trying, guys," she says. "I mean, I could hear it bang, bang, bangity bang in the room next door." However, despite the effort, the shop ultimately had no better luck than Walmart. "They come out to me, and they tell me, … ‘We cannot get your tire off, and we don’t really know what to do,’" she recalls. One employee suggested a more aggressive approach, one that could potentially damage her wheels. "One of them suggests that I take it to Midas, who can torch it off my tire," she says. "But they could possibly ruin my rim, and I also have to pay 150 bucks to have that done." She says her husband’s attempts at home also fell short. "My honey, who is the strongest man alive, could not get this thing off," she says. "So if my honey can't do it … I have no idea what to do." She concludes, "I’m stuck, Chuck." Commenters Share Their Suggestions In the comments section, users shared suggestions on what she should do next. "Drill it out so you don’t damage the rim," one user advised. "You need a long heavy duty 3/4 ratchet and a very long 6 ft steel extension pipe to go over the wratchet handle," another stated. "The problem is leverage." A third commenter didn’t offer much hope. "Sadly you have to take it to a mechanic so they can torch it off," they wrote. "Unfortunately your rims will probably get ruined." Why Lug Nuts Can Become Impossible to Remove According to Restored Auto, several factors can lead to this issue. Some of the most common causes, the site says, are lug-nut corrosion or mistakes made during installation. Some of these mistakes include overtightening, which happens when a technician applies too much torque, potentially damaging or stretching the threads. Another culprit could be cross-threading, where the lug nut isn’t properly aligned with the stud before being tightened. Environmental factors may also play a role, such as corrosion of metal components or dirt and debris entering the threads. What Is The Best Way To Fix The Issue? According to experts at AutoZone, the best way to remove stuck lug nuts is to use an impact tool or heat. The site recommends having tools like a breaker bar, impact wrench, torch, or impact hammer on hand before attempting removal. Which tools you use depends on the severity of the case. To loosen the lug nuts initially, the site recommends using additional leverage with a breaker bar. A good second step, it says, is to apply lubricant or penetrating oil and let it soak for about 10 minutes to dissolve the corrosion. For more stubborn cases, a torch or impact hammer may be necessary. The site notes that the rims might be damaged in the process, but that in some cases, it may be the only way to remove the lug nuts.
