The problem with a bicycle, at least when it comes to safety, is that you're sort of out there all by yourself with no shell to protect you from the maniacs out there. Cars solve that, but Volkswagen is combining some aspects of its passenger cars with a new e-bike in the hopes it can make cycling safer for both riders and those sharing the road with them.VW's new e-bike comes with a pair of accessories designed to make riding smarter and safer.VolkswagenDeveloped in partnership with e-bike manufacturer n+, the new Sport Bike focuses (perhaps ironically) on safety over speed and features. The core of this network of safety features is VW's Smart View, which gives riders an integrated rear-view camera and radar-assisted traffic monitoring.A display is integrated into the handlebars, which takes real-time data from a mudguard-mounted camera and the radar system to allow riders a comprehensive view of what's behind them. Just like a car, the bike will also notify riders of cars in their blind spot.AdvertisementAdvertisementVisibility is key, too. n+ and VW developed a new full-length LED light bar that runs along the bike's top tube. It can act like a car's daytime running light, or flash red under braking, or act as a turn signal.VolkswagenA Smart Helmet can pair to the bike via Bluetooth, mirroring the bike's lights with its own, or using a built-in accelerometer to detect a crash and send texts to whomever you'd like. Smart Glasses give riders a head-up display, just like a car. It'll show directions, blind-spot warnings, and more within your field of view.E-bikes in general aren't cheap, but the n+ bike is relatively competitive, starting at $4,000 USD. Meanwhile, the accessories are rather pricey. Each starts around $670.This story was originally published by Men's Journal on Jul 18, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
