Volkswagen is recalling nearly 100,000 electric vehicles due to a potential issue with battery modules that could affect performance and safety.According to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), which functions much like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the US, the recall affects about 75,000 VW ID models and roughly 20,000 Cupra Born vehicles produced between February 2022 and August 2024. The problem involves the EVs’ high-voltage battery modules, which may not meet specifications. In affected vehicles, the issue can lead to reduced driving range and, potentially, a fire risk, regulators said. Volkswagen says it plans to address the problem with a combination of software and hardware fixes. Owners need to bring their vehicles to dealerships to have a software update installed and the battery system physically inspected. If necessary, individual battery modules will be replaced. The recall affects vehicles built on Volkswagen’s MEB electric platform, which underpins several of the company’s core EV models, including the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5 and ID. Buzz. No injuries or property damage have been reported in connection with the issue.Autoweek SOC EV Newsletter sign up
