The ID. Polo is set to kick off a new chapter at Volkswagen as the first model from its new family of entry-level EVs. A new family of entry-level VW EVs “With an entry-level price starting at 25,000 euros, we are making electric mobility accessible to many people in Europe,” Volkswagen brand boss Thomas Schäfer said in December. Volkswagen claims the ID. Polo is “more versatile than any of its predecessors.” It will be the first of four smaller, more affordable electric vehicles that will bear an established Volkswagen brand name. The electric Polo will also bring an entirely new look and feel to the “ID” series as Volkswagen aims to recapture the brand’s essence in the modern era. While we’ve seen several images of camouflaged prototypes testing, offering a closer look at the size and proportions, the latest sketches from Volkswagen’s head of design, Andreas Mindt, confirm the production ID. Polo will look nearly identical to the concept. Mindt posted the sketches on social media with a caption that read: “The ID. Polo follows a clear idea: stable proportions, likable character, and that extra ‘secret sauce.” Volkswagen ID. Polo set to debut on April 29 Volkswagen’s design boss also confirmed the ID. Polo will debut tomorrow, April 29, at 12:00 CEST. Following the new ID.3 Neo launched earlier this month, the ID. Polo is a “true Volkswagen,” the company said. The next-generation EVs feature a refined design inside and out, or that “secret sauce” Mindt was referring to, and a new drive system enabling a longer range. Volkswagen previewed the ID. Polo interior earlier this year, showing a design that remains close to the concept. The updated infotainment system features a 13″ central touchscreen and a 10.25″ driver-cluster display. At 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, the electric Polo is about the same size as the gas-powered model, but thanks to compact drive modules and a flat battery pack design, the ID. Polo offers more interior space. Volkswagen said the extra space is “particularly noticeable in the rear,” with an additional 19 mm added to the interior. A high-performance GTI version will join later this year, delivering 166 kW (223 hp). It will offer two battery pack options: a 37 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a 52 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, delivering up to 450 km (280 miles) of WLTP driving range. Following the ID. Polo, Volkswagen will launch the ID. Cross this summer as an electric counterpart to the T Cross SUV. We will learn final prices and specs tomorrow when the ID. Polo makes its official debut. Check back for a breakdown with images. Stay up to date with the latest content by subscribing to Electrek on Google News.
