Volkswagen to Offer an ID.Buzz Camper… Sort ofVolkswagen (Volkswagen)Volkswagen’s ID.Buzz gets a bed and some blackout curtains for 2027.The bed comes with a mattress, but we don’t know much more. It’s still a long way from being a camper van, and we don’t know what the price or range will be, two sticking points for buyers who were disappointed in both. The Volkswagen ID.Buzz didn’t turn out to be quite as popular as we might have expected it to be. The range was too short, the price was too high, and the front end just looks like a Botox-lips accident. Thus, VW canceled the whole 2026 model year to clear ID.Buzzes off dealer lots.AdvertisementAdvertisementBut when the 2027 model year comes around, buyers will be able to get something that kept hippie campers housed for generations: a camper van.Not really a full-on camper van. The top doesn’t pop, there are no appliances inside like a fridge, sink, or armoire, but there is a bed, and that’s a start. Heck, that’s what optimistic teenagers valued most in their VW vans of yore. Here’s how VW puts it:“After a hiatus for model year 2026, the ID.Buzz rejoins the 2027 Volkswagen model lineup with a new offer structure—trims now include Pro S RWD, Pro S 4Motion (new), Tourer 4Motion (new), and Pro S Plus 4Motion. The lineup also features revised color and wheel options.VW pillow cases are a nice touch.Volkswagen (Volkswagen)“Built off the European ‘Good Night Package,’ the Tourer includes a fold-out mattress with platform, window blinds, front window ventilation panels, an exterior table and chairs, and Overnight Mode software that adapts interior and exterior functionality to enable the vehicle to be used for overnight stays. Built off the Pro S 4Motion model, the ID.Buzz Tourer adds a retractable tow hitch, Captain’s Chairs, an electrochromic smart roof, Area View, and 20-inch dark graphite wheels with black discs.”Blackout screens enhance sleep.Volkswagen (Volkswagen)Two things are missing from that announcement: price and range, the same two things that have kept a lot of buyers away from the ID.Buzz since it came out after a couple decades of anticipation. The 2025-model ID.Buzz has an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles for the rear-drive model and 231 miles for the AWD model. Most competitors are clearing 300 miles and more.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe VW ID.Buzz currently costs between $61,545 and $72,540 MSRP for new 2025 inventory, dealers say.“Due to aggressive dealer discounts on leftover 2025 stock and EV lease incentives, you can often find net prices or effective leases dipping into the mid-$40,000s,” my local dealer says. The blackout shades as seen from the inside.Volkswagen (Volkswagen)There are also no photos of the 2027 ID.Buzz, just these four shots of the interior. It’s also not explained (very well, anyway) whether there’s a separate mattress for the bed or whether you just sleep on the folded-flat seats like Eurovan campers have done for years. The 2027 ID.Buzz will also feature a North American Charging System (NACS) adapter and one pedal driving functionality, Volkswagen says.AdvertisementAdvertisementAnd forget about single-color vans, too. “The color offer has been simplified to reduce complexity,” VW says. “Only two-tone paint schemes will be offered, and new Candy White over Cherry Red scheme with white wheels evokes an iconic Type 2 Microbus color combination.”More to come soon, but here’s hoping the price is affordable and there’s some accommodation for better range.
