Volkswagen has just announced a fix for a glaring hole in its vehicle lineup. The German automaker has just revealed a new full-hybrid system that will be coming to production later this year. It's the first full hybrid system from VW in 10 years, since it dropped the poor-selling Jetta Hybrid in 2016.For now, at least, the system is taking off in Europe with two vehicles. Here's what you need to know. Volkswagen Has Many Powertrains, But Not One Of These Volkswagen A look at the Volkswagen Group's lineup around the world shows an immense array of powertrains. We're talking 1.0-liter three-cylinder mills to the Lamborghini V12, with plenty of electrics and PHEVs in the mix. But while there have been plenty of 48V mild hybrids, there hasn't been a Volkswagen badged car with a full hybrid since that late Jetta.VW's new hybrid system fills that gap with a system that sounds a lot like Honda's. It starts with a gas engine, then has two electric motors. One motor is actually a generator, and the other drives the tires in most situations. The company didn't announce any specs for the system, but the 1.5-liter engine is most likely VW's latest TSI Evo2.It launched in the T-Roc in 2022 and makes between 129 and 158 horsepower, depending on the vehicle. The new hybrid setup will launch for Europe in the new Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrids.Volkswagen has packaged the engine, both electric motors, the power electronics, differential, and a single-speed transmission all into one module. That saves space and makes packaging the system into a vehicle easier. In most situations, this hybrid system's second electric motor drives the wheels. The gas engine comes on and off as needed to charge the 1.6 kWh battery that is integrated into the floor at the back of the vehicle. When it's more efficient, which can include highway driving speeds, the gas engine becomes the primary drive source to the vehicle. The electric motor then works to boost power, like when you're accelerating. It will also allow more time with the engine off on the highway like other hybrid vehicles. This Could Be VW's New US Hybrid System Volkswagen Because it has an electric A/C compressor and electric brake servo, the vehicle doesn't need to run the engine to cool the car or provide power brake assist. That means it can spend more time in electric mode for higher efficiency. VW also says that the new hybrids should be quieter at low speeds and in urban traffic. There will be three drive modes on both models: Comfort, Eco, and Sport modes. Eco limits power to 70% of the system's max and turns off the electric boost feature. Sport makes the gas power changeover happen sooner, so you have more available power more of the time. But, Volkswagen hasn't said yet how much power the system can make, or how efficient it will be. It has said that there will be two different power levels, though, and that both will use less fuel than a 48V mild hybrid. The Golf Hybrid and T-Roc Hybrids will not make it to the US, as the models they're based on aren't sold here. Volkswagen US confirmed last year that it had two hybrid models planned for the US, but those are more likely the Tiguan and Atlas, or possibly the Taos.VW USA's two hybrids could use this system, though the three-row Atlas might be too large for it. The US could get its own system, though, as CEO Kjell Gruner said that the hybrid systems would need to be built in the US.
