Image: CATLAt the end of 2024, the Chinese global battery market leader CATL unveiled its Bedrock Chassis. Based on CATL’s well-known Cell-to-Chassis technology, the system integrates battery cells directly into the chassis, making the battery a structural component of the vehicle’s design. During development, CATL focused on a new, ‘ultra-safe’ construction capable of absorbing 85 per cent of a vehicle’s collision energy – compared to around 60 per cent in conventional chassis. The chassis is designed to withstand an impact at 120 km/h without catching fire or exploding. The Bedrock Chassis combines core components such as the battery, electric powertrain, thermal management system, and chassis domain controller into a single platform. This integration allows the chassis to manage both the vehicle’s energy and motion control, effectively acting as a mobile energy carrier, according to CATL.CATL has now secured its first customer outside China for this product: the Turkish electric vehicle manufacturer Togg, which began selling its vehicles in Germany in September. Although CATL batteries have long been used by European manufacturers and CATL operates its own cell factory in Thuringia, this collaboration marks a new milestone. As part of the partnership, CATL’s chassis subsidiary CAIT will contribute both the Bedrock Chassis technology as well as technical expertise, working closely with Togg to jointly develop the platform for three models of the brand’s new B-segment vehicle family. These vehicles will be similar in size to the Volkswagen ID. Polo or the Renault 5 E-Tech. The platform is therefore expected to produce next-generation EVs for the Turkish and European markets, with Togg set to play a key role in shaping the user experience, product requirements, and digital architecture. The first model from this partnership is expected to enter series production as early as 2027.CATL CEO Robin Zeng stated: “This collaboration represents another important milestone in the global expansion of the CATL Bedrock Chassis following its mass production rollout in the Chinese market. It will also serve as a benchmark project in the field of integrated intelligent chassis, strengthening our global partnerships, accelerating electrification and supporting the transition to low-carbon mobility in emerging new energy markets.”Togg CEO Fuat Tosyalı added: “Rather than adopting a ready-made solution, we are becoming part of the entire development process, responding more effectively to user needs while also contributing to the development of this ecosystem in our country. In the period ahead, through such value-creating partnerships, we will further enrich the Togg ecosystem and the experience we offer our users by developing new solutions across different segments.”prnewswire.com
