This Hot Hatch Teems with Angry Red CrocodilesAlpineThis wacky collaboration between Lacoste and French automaker Alpine brings some of the most unique design details we've ever seen. The A290's hood features a red pool with three swimming crocodiles, while a larger translucent croc pokes its angry red head onto the rear spoiler. The white exterior is contrasted by a red cabin featuring seats with 3-D-printed latticework and dozens of crocodile patches plastered onto the dashboard in varying sizes.Automakers love to partner with clothing brands. Ford is set to start selling the Bronco Filson Edition next year, Mini worked with Deus Ex Machina on a pair of sporty concepts, and BMW paired up with Kith on a special-edition XM SUV, just to name some examples from the past few years. Now, French performance-car company Alpine has teamed up with Lacoste on a wacky version of its A290 electric hot hatch, which is full of playful details.AlpineRevealed last week, this special Alpine Lacoste A290 Rallye has been given the name "Beware of the Crocodile," and the inspiration behind that moniker becomes obvious when you start looking closely at what separates this hatchback from a standard A290. The car wears matte bluish-white paint and rides on clean white aerodisc wheels.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe bumpers have been completely redesigned. The front end features a white panel with debossed Lacoste branding, sitting within a rectangle of forged carbon fiber that also includes vents to cool the powertrain. The rear now features a large white diffuser within its own forged carbon-fiber housing. The A290 Rallye also now wears a prominent rear spoiler.Get closer, and you'll find some more unusual changes. The headlights have been replaced with body-colored panels with a single red LED slash, with the square rally lights trading the X-shaped design from the production car for an Alpine logo and a Lacoste logo. The taillights feature the same body-colored look and thin red vertical lighting. But the highlight is all of the crocodiles. The hood, which normally has a rectangular trim piece with an Alpine badge under a clear cover, now has a pool of red with three angry-looking crocodiles swimming in it. Around back, the rear window has been removed, and a much larger, translucent red crocodile is poking its head out and onto the rear spoiler in a snarling, menacing grin. There's even a little white fin on the roof of the car that looks like a crocodile's scaly back sticking out of the water.Inside, Lacoste and Alpine took the crocodile theme to the extreme. The entire cabin is red, meant to look "as if the driver were literally stepping into the crocodile's mouth," Alpine says. The doors feature a special Alpine x Lacoste logo, the racing bucket seats feature a 3-D-printed latticework, and the seat pads and doors are upholstered in a fabric used by Lacoste for its clothes. The steering wheel wears the same material and has a green stripe at the 12 o'clock position, while the dashboard is also covered in Lacoste's crocodile patch in varying sizes.AdvertisementAdvertisementAll told, the Lacoste and Alpine collaboration has 290 crocodiles found across its distinctive exterior and interior. Is it overkill? Perhaps, but it's certainly one of the most unique partnerships we've seen between a car company and a clothing brand, and the first time we've seen crocodiles swimming on the hood of a car.➡️ Skip the lot.
