Some of the greatest European sports cars the world has ever seen ran in the Coppa delle Alpi last weekend, but a lowly Fiat beat them all. The 1937 Fiat 508 C of Alberto Aliverti and Sergio Carrara took top honors in this year’s Coppa delle Alpi, a midwinter’s dalliance over the sometimes-frozen Alps. While most rallyists put away their sports cars for the winter in vacuum-sealed chambers filled with inert gas, those who participate in the Coppa delle Alpi keep charging all year round. First run in 2021, the Coppa delle Alpi is put on by the same people who run the Mille Miglia. It has been a rally destination for true sports car enthusiasts with really good jackets ever since. Il Coppa started this year in the mountain town of Madulain, Switzerland, just outside St. Moritz. From there it criss-crossed passes in Italy and Suisse for three days, including a control stop in the Piazza Kuerc in Bormio, and the Foscagno and Eira passes in Italy. There was even a time trial on the frozen surface of the ice rink in Livigno in northernmost Italy. The first two days were run in sunshine, with almost spring-like weather. The third day saw what organizers called heavy snow. The total event included almost 400 miles of driving, 80 time trials, six average trials, 10 time controls, and seven passage controls. When all was said and finito, the little Fiat had beaten Ferraris, Porsches, Lancias, and all other comers with the fewest penalty points: 617.87.
