This DIY Van Conversion Built For Colorado Mountain Exploration Just Had Its First Test RunI've spent months staring at raw wood, measuring layout options, and wiring up electrical components in the tight confines of a van chassis. Every builder knows that agonizing feeling. You pour your heart into a mobile home setup, but you never truly know if it works until you get it out into the wild. This weekend, it was finally time to drop the tools and hit the road. I took the newly finished Ram ProMaster build out into the heart of Colorado for its official maiden voyage. The goal was simple. Find a spot, park, and see how the design handles real-world mountain living. The spot we found faced a massive alpine reservoir, framed perfectly by the jagged peaks of the Rocky Mountains. Opening up those rear barn doors for the first time with that view was surreal. The elevation was high. The air was crisp. The result? Pure perfection. Our entire design philosophy for this build centered around maximizing both interior utility and exterior visibility. Inside, we opted for clean tongue-and-groove pine ceiling panels paired with white shiplap walls to keep the space feeling open and airy. A MaxxFan Deluxe is mounted right above the main living area to ensure proper ventilation when cooking or sleeping at high altitudes. The platform bed sits high in the back, creating a massive "garage" storage area underneath for gear, while keeping the sleeping quarters cozy and level with the back windows.AdvertisementAdvertisementOn the passenger side, a custom Baltic birch galley kitchen features deep drawers and a solid countertop surface, leaving plenty of room to move around. We even integrated a small bench seat near the side door. It doubles as a storage chest and the perfect spot to sit with a notebook, lace up your boots, or just look out at the landscape.Seeing the van parked alongside our support rig against that mountain backdrop proved that all those hours in the workshop were worth it. This run wasn't just a test. It was proof that the space works exactly how we envisioned. If you are planning your own van build, my biggest piece of advice is to prioritize your view lines. Build your bed and seating layout so that when those doors open, the landscape becomes your actual living room. Don't overcomplicate your first layout. Start minimal, test it in the elements, and tweak the build as you go.
