Buying a kid a Corvette bed car is a sure-fire way to ruin their financial future. They’ll spend many nights dreaming of driving that thing around, raising all sorts of automotive mayhem. That’s a bug they’ll chase for the rest of their lives, spending every last dollar they have to make it happen. I don’t mean that figuratively, either. The crew over at BUM Motorsports never let their childhood dreams die. Maybe they didn’t have a mystical cabinet like the one from Indian in the Cupboard to help bring their toys to life, but they do have fabrication skills, which are arguably much better. They wielded that power to turn a kid's Chevrolet Corvette bed into an actual, running, driving car, belting out 130 horsepower. Corvette Bed Car Turned Into The Real Deal BUM Motorsports, YouTubeLike most great stories, this one starts with a crew of gearheads who had a spare GSXR motor, access to a well-equipped shop, and way too much time on their hands. Well, all of that, plus a Corvette-style bed intended for children. Though, the machine they turned it into is anything but kid-friendly.The latest upload in this multi-part series on BUM's YouTube channel opens up with what is a fairly complete project—at least by most DIY standards. The Corvette bed car actually runs and drives under its own power. Of course, they didn’t just crudely stuff a GSXR engine into a bed frame. They wanted this thing to be fully functional, and with a 130-horsepower engine at the helm, that does mean some serious equipment needs to be in place. The foundation is a custom tubular frame, built specifically for the Corvette bed. Much of the GSXR’s operating systems were used for this project, along with a blend of build-specific components that were fabricated to make it all work. The result is a rear-wheel-drive tire-frying monster that the kid in all of us would love to tear up with. Who am I kidding? The adult in us wants a crack at it, too. Making A ‘Street Legal’ Bed Car BUM Motorsports, YouTubeAs ridiculous as this Corvette bed car already is, the team behind it just took things well beyond your expectations. They set out to make it a ‘street legal’ machine, by outfitting everything it would need to pass a DOT inspection. That means it has a functional hood, exhaust system, and even lights. By all counts, it’s now as close to a real car as a bed could actually get. The BUM Motorsports crew didn’t stop there. They also installed a real carbon fiber wing at the rear of the Corvette bed car, and finished it off with a high-gloss wrap, mimicking the sort of paint job you’d expect to see on a full-size ‘Vette of this caliber. It’s an absolute riot to behold, and we can’t wait to see what the future has in store for this machine. Gearheads Don’t Grow Up, They Just Get Better Toys BUM Motorsports, YouTubeWe’re all guilty of taking things too seriously in the garage. More often than not, passion projects become overwhelming and frustrating. Before you know it, they can feel more like a job than a hobby, and you have to force yourself to get out to the shop and see things through. If nothing else, this project is a reminder of why we do what we do.The Corvette bed car is exactly the kind of thing we’d all wished our toys were when we were kids. The child-like imagination that fueled dreams of ripping around in cool machines is exactly the same spark that keeps car culture alive, even for adults. It's important not to lose sight of that, especially not when you're trying to bring a vision to life. This clip will put the kind of smile on your face that'll remind you of what makes this industry so special. It serves up the push we all need to get over the deep winter funk that bogs so many gearheads down this time of year, making it well-worth the watch.
