The Best Cars, Trucks, and SUVs For Tall PeopleMotorTrend - MotorTrendFor tall people, loving cars can be a frustrating contradiction. I know the problem firsthand: At 6 feet, 10 inches tall, fitting behind the wheel isn't always certain. There might be a vehicle I want to try, but the driving position simply doesn't work. My height often turns cars into tight squeezes—or rules them out entirely. But over the years I've found many comfortably spacious vehicles. Some make sense, and others are complete surprises. They prove how official headroom and legroom measurements don't tell the whole story, and that trying on a car is the only way to really know. So take advice from this giant car enthusiast about some of the best cars for tall people.1) Best Electric SUV for Tall People: Hyundai Ioniq 5Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendI had the pleasure of living with Hyundai's award-winning electric crossover for an entire year. Part of my enjoyment came from the Ioniq 5's spaciousness and ergonomics. I was always comfortable while driving. It provided just enough headroom and legroom—39.8 and 41.7 inches, respectively—while keeping my elbows at a natural bend for holding the steering wheel.2)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendOur high-end Limited-trim model featured a sliding center console. When in its rearmost position, it allowed me to stretch my legs across the flat floor at a stop or when the highway driving aids were engaged. One complaint is that this Limited trim's extending driver's seat ottoman was too short to support my calves. Regardless, the Ioniq 5 is unquestionably better for tall people than its platform counterpart, the Kia EV6, which has little rear headroom.3) Best Compact Crossover for Tall People: Honda CR-VPhoto credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendSome SUVs are unexpectedly cramped. They appear spacious on the outside, but their upright, chairlike seating position inside limits space behind the wheel. Not with the Honda CR-V. For the current generation, Honda made the CR-V's seating position feel somewhat like a car. The low H-point boosts headroom to 40.0 inches, while 41.3 inches of front legroom provides space to stretch.4)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendAdvertisementAdvertisementFurthermore, the CR-V's front seats have generous side bolstering that provides good lateral support for a stable driving position. For tall drivers, the Honda CR-V stands out among compact crossovers for its ergonomic excellence.5) Best Muscle Car for Tall People: Ford MustangPhoto credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendFord's iconic pony car is excellent for tall people. The newest, S650-generation Mustang boasts 44.5 inches of front legroom, a figure that surpasses most other vehicles. Headroom in the coupe lists at a more average 37.6 inches. (There's much, much more in the convertible.) But reclining the seat still allows a reasonably upright seating position.6)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendDoing that put the steering wheel slightly far away for my liking, though the GT model's available six-speed manual shifter—the only transmission worth getting—was still within easy reach. Just don't try to fit in the tiny back seat, no matter how tall you are.7) Best Large Luxury Sedan for Tall People: BMW 7 Series/i7Photo credit: willia walker - MotorTrendBMW's legendary full-size luxury sedan (and its all-electric equivalent) is one of the few vehicles where I don't have to slide the seat fully rearward—if I do, my elbows lock out when holding the steering wheel. The 7 Series and i7 both have 39.8 inches of headroom and 41.2 inches of legroom up front but feel much more spacious from inside.8)Photo credit: willia walker - MotorTrendAdvertisementAdvertisementThank the front seats for that; they're ultra comfortable and adjustable. Key is that the backrest is adjustable from two positions: the expected pivot near the hip, then another about halfway up. After leaning the lower hinge point back, I tilt the upper adjustment forward to return support to my shoulders and head. This system allows for a sublime driving position, aided by the seats' plushness and excellent massage feature.9) Best Three-Row SUV for Tall People: Cadillac Escalade IQPhoto credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendHere's a case where a big SUV provides big space. The Cadillac Escalade IQ is absolutely enormous, with a cabin sized proportionally. This award-winning behemoth gives the driver 43.5 inches of headroom and 45.2 inches of legroom, some of the biggest measurements anywhere.10)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendHowever, the driving position and ergonomics aren't great. The flat seat and low wheel put the body in a somewhat splayed, awkward position. Even so, the Escalade IQ gives tall drivers a great amount of space, with huge, motorized slabs for doors easing ingress and egress. This is a tall SUV that fits tall people and makes for a lovely rolling living room for anyone on board.11) Best Luxury Sports Car for Tall People: Porsche 911Photo credit: MotorTrendThe Porsche 911 isn't a fantastic fit for tall people because it has a roomy cabin. Rather, this rear-engine legend is a masterclass in driver ergonomics. Seriously, this is without question one of the all-around best cars for tall people that I've ever driven—it's an excellent example of how simple measurements don't prove comfort. I'd go so far as to say it's almost perfect.12)Photo credit: MotorTrendAdvertisementAdvertisementThe 911's front seat slides very far back, and a low H-point gives tall drivers the impression they're locked into a cockpit. Its steering wheel telescopes enough to come close to the chest, improving arm stability to add confidence in demanding handling situations. This doesn't apply to every Porsche sports car; the 718 Cayman and Boxster are tighter though still decent considering their small size. The all-electric Taycan is quite spacious, though.13) Best Small Luxury SUV for Tall People: Acura ADXPhoto credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendSometimes, good enough has to be good enough. Spaciousness is generally lacking in the subcompact luxury SUV segment, but the Acura ADX I'm assigned for long-term review isn't so bad. Front headroom and legroom list at 38.5 and 41.9 inches, respectively.14)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendEven though the ADX doesn't give me enough room to really sprawl out, it only starts to feel snug after a few hours of driving. The seating position is well resolved, holding all the body's angles in a natural, comfortable place. A bit more headroom and under-thigh support would be nice, but the ADX suffices as a small SUV that works for tall people. I can't really complain.15) Best Pickup Truck for Tall People: Ford F-150Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendIt's no shock that the Ford F-150 works well for tall drivers; this bestselling pickup is only "small" when compared with its F-250 and F-350 Super Duty siblings. Across regular-, extended-, and crew-cab versions, front-seat space in the F-150 stays the same, with 40.8 inches of headroom and 43.9 inches of legroom.16)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendAdvertisementAdvertisementThat also applies to the now-discontinued all-electric F-150 Lightning, which gives up none of that space relative to the gas-powered truck. That's not always true of EVs adapted from combustion models, where packaging an underfloor battery can affect space in the cabin. Here, though, there's no special trick—the Ford F-150 is simply a big truck that's big on the inside, too.17) Best Affordable Fun Car for Tall People: Toyota GR86/Subaru BRZPhoto credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendNo, I'm not joking—a good sports car for tall people is indisputably tiny. The Toyota GR86 and related Subaru BRZ are among the smallest performance cars on sale, but they combine smart ergonomics with a low H-point to become surprisingly commodious. Legroom is a decent 41.5 inches, but headroom is only 37.0 inches. For track days, tall people might not fit with a helmet on.18)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendBut for local routes and canyon carving, there's enough room for tall drivers to enjoy the cars' peppy engine and lively handling. Even though the Mazda Miata, these Toyobaru twins' Japanese nemesis, is a convertible, the GR86 and BRZ feel roomier. I once folded myself into a Miata, which required keeping the roof down—and it didn't take long for my hat to get blown away.19) Best Subcompact SUV for Tall People: Kia SoulPhoto credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendCounterintuitively, smaller cars often seem to fit me better. See the Kia Soul, which has overall ergonomics bang-on for a driver of my height. Its low H-point—or hip point, a term used by automotive designers to indicate occupants' hip location in a cross section of a car—improves headroom, along with the Soul's tall roof. Its front seat has 39.9 inches of headroom and 41.1 inches of legroom.20)Photo credit: MotorTrend - MotorTrendAdvertisementAdvertisementThe seat also angles to give solid under-thigh support. How far the steering wheel telescopes out keeps the controls comfortably within reach. The Kia Soul isn't big, but it's nevertheless one of the most accommodating vehicles I've driven. Kia has now discontinued the Soul, and the one-size-up Seltos somehow feels less spacious.
