Tesla Cybertruck Can Finally Power Your Home, But There’s A CatchMotorBiscuitSaajan JogiaSat, September 12, 2026 at 11:00 AM UTCAdd us on GoogleThe Tesla Cybertruck has gained a new job beyond hauling and driving- keeping a house running when the electricity goes out. Tesla is rolling out its Powershare Home Backup feature, allowing the electric pickup to send energy from its high-voltage battery to a home. The capability is part of the broader Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technology that allows an EV to export stored electricity rather than simply drawing power from the grid. While the Cybertruck's V2H potential was discussed when the first production-ready trucks reached customers three years ago, Tesla has now expanded the system to work with its stationary home-energy equipment. There is, however, a significant requirement. Cybertruck owners must have a Powerwall 3 installed at home to use the new setup. Tesla's Wall Connector is also needed to activate the vehicle's power-export function.AdvertisementAdvertisementOnce configured, the Cybertruck can add a substantial amount of stored energy to a home's backup supply. Tesla says the pickup can increase backup duration by more than three days, describing the added capacity as equivalent to nine additional Powerwalls. The system is capable of handling considerable electrical loads as well. Both the Powerwall 3 and the Cybertruck's power-export function support up to 11.5 kilowatts of AC power, which Tesla says should be sufficient for virtually any household scenario.a silver and black car parked in a parking lotOlder Tesla Energy Systems Will FollowPowerwall 3 owners are the only Tesla customers currently eligible for the new Cybertruck integration. The company says Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ compatibility is coming by the end of the year.Several Cybertruck owners have reported receiving emails from the company asking them to take a survey ahead of activating the feature on their systems. Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill described the technology as a first-of-its-kind effort to combine two different energy sources into one cohesive electrical system through the same connector used to charge the truck.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe latest development builds on functionality Tesla introduced in 2024. A software update enabled the Cybertruck to provide home backup through a Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector. That earlier arrangement differed from the new Powerwall setup because the Gateway itself has no battery. The Cybertruck therefore had to supply the backup energy on its own.Powerwall 3 & I can now power your house together⁰ ⁰This extends your home backup by over 3 days, equivalent to 9 additional Powerwalls pic.twitter.com/8G2twIm6AN— Cybertruck (@cybertruck) September 10, 2026The Setup Isn't CheapThe hardware needed to enable V2H for the Cybertruck costs $1,970 before installation. A Powerwall 3 kit costs $16,000, including installation, according to the source. With the least expensive Cybertruck, the Dual Motor All-Wheel Drive model, costing a little over $75,000, Tesla's home-backup capability represents a sizable additional investment.AdvertisementAdvertisementStill, the feature gives Cybertruck owners a way to turn the pickup's battery into a major source of household energy when the grid fails, rather than leaving that capacity unused while the truck sits parked.
