Okay, it's not quite as catchy. Two years ago we put the Subaru Crosstrek and Toyota Corolla Cross against each other-along with nine other options in the class. At the very end, it was… well actually, neither of them won, but it was the Toyota that squeaked ahead to nab silver, almost entirely down to its at-the-time, class-exclusive hybrid powertrain. The Scooby, in rugged Wilderness form, was capable but thirsty. Now Subaru has borrowed Toyota's excellent hybrid tech and adapted it to the brand's unique Boxer-four setup. What's more, the brand has kept its mechanical all-wheel drive in place, instead of using Toyota's simpler, electric all-wheel drive setup. Is this enough to leapfrog the Corolla Cross in the segment? Mike and I had to find out. What's New for 2026: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Words: Mike Schlee Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: The addition of a hybrid version of the Crosstrek is the big news for the 2026 model year. Although this is the third time the brand has released a Crosstrek Hybrid, this is the most conventional battery assisted version of the SUV to date. Other than the new drivetrain, there are also a few technology features added to the Crosstrek this year, found exclusively on Hybrid versions. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid: The Corolla Cross Hybrid also gets updates this year in the form of a mid-cycle refresh. Headlining the changes is a new front fascia with a color matching grille. Inside there is the new 10.25-inch infotainment screen on higher trim levels and all models get a new center console. Finally, there is a new color available called Cavalry Blue which is not found on our tester. Exterior Style: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Crosstrek: If ever there's been a brand that has applied the thinking of "car but taller and with more plastic cladding" to the crossover scene, it's Subaru. The company arguably invented the idea in the modern era with the Outback, which only just recently split from being simply a ruggedized Legacy. Here in 2026 the Crosstrek remains the purest embodiment of the approach, being quite clearly an Impreza running around on stilts. The latest generation continues that other Subaru tradition of being almost indistinguishable from its predecessor, but there are clever touches like the asymmetric wheelarch cladding and the trim "wings" that connect the headlights to the Pleiades logo up front. The hybrid announces its presence not only with subtle e-Boxer badging but funky, four-spoke alloy wheels. It's a shame about the color choice, though: is pallid flesh this year's trend or something? 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: All the Details 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: All the Details View Gallery 29 photos subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Corolla Cross: By comparison, the Corolla Cross gets an entirely different shnoz when buyers opt for the hybrid. We're just not entirely convinced that it's the better-looking one. The slim faux-grille connecting the headlights and smaller lower air intake are good-it's the cheese grater grille that has us both scratching our chins. The rest of the shape is the basically the same as before, more shrunken-down RAV4 than an actual Corolla. At least it's all dipped in Mazda's excellent Soul Red: yes, the two brands share a few different paint options now thanks to a joint plant in Alabama. 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross SE: All the Details 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross SE: All the Details View Gallery 45 photos Powertrain and Fuel Economy: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Words: Mike Schlee Crosstrek: Subaru's hybridization of the Crosstrek involves electric motors and batteries sourced from Toyota. That stated, the two set-ups are quite different. The Crosstrek Hybrid still uses the brand's 2.5-liter flat-four-cylinder engine but detuned to 162 hp and 154 lb-ft of torque. Wedged into the continuously variable automatic transmission is an 88 kW electric motor that produces 118 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque. It's powered by a 1.1 kWh battery pack, enabling the entire system to produce a maximum of 194 hp and an undisclosed amount of torque, which we'd wager is easily greater than 200 lb-ft. Although those numbers aren't a quantum leap over the regular Crosstrek's power figures, in real world use there is a noticeable difference. There's so much more usable, low-end torque. The Crosstrek Hybrid leaves from a stop with authority and power never wanes, even at freeway speeds. That power doesn't build as quickly nor as freely as found in the Corolla Cross Hybrid, but we'd say both small SUVs feel like they hold a power advantage at different times, depending on circumstances. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Since Subaru retains a proper, mechanical all-wheel drive system, there is more drag on the drivetrain at all times. This means lower fuel economy figures of 36 mpg (6.5 L/100 km) city and 36 mpg (6.5 L/100 km) highway. That's still a substantial improvement over a regular Crosstrek, especially the city fuel economy figures. One note we need to make about the Subaru's hybrid system has to do with gas engine refiring. As is the case with any good hybrid, the Crosstrek can drive on all electric power for short periods of time with the engine switched off. When that gas engine fires back to life though, especially when it is still cold, it is rough. We mean, quite coarse, almost sounding like it is loose in the engine bay. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Corolla Cross: The Corolla Cross Hybrid uses a smaller gas engine, measuring 2.0-liters in displacement and making 150 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque. Unlike the Crosstrek though, there is no mechanical all-wheel drive system. Instead, the gas engine is paired to an electric motor to drive the front wheels, while a secondary, smaller electric motor is used to exclusively power the rear wheels when needed. This creates a bit more total power compared to the Crosstrek, with the Corolla Cross Hybrid officially rated for 196 hp. As mentioned, on the road power builds quicker and freer in the Toyota. It feels more potent in a straight line the higher the rpms build. The downside is engine noise. Whereas the Corolla Cross Hybrid does a much better job smoothening the transitioning from all electric power to gasoline hybrid, the engine is louder and thrashier inside the Toyota as the revs build. It's also a rev-happy engine, so getting that high pitched mechanical wail happens often. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Without a driveshaft powering the rear wheels, there is less friction on the Corolla Cross Hybrid's drivetrain. This means less capability, which we'll cover in the next section. As far as fuel economy goes though, it's a big benefit. Officially, the 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross AWD is rated at 46 mpg (5.2 L/100 km) in the city and 39 mpg (6.1 L/100 km) on the highway. Summary: Both drivetrains have their pros and cons, but the massive fuel economy advantage for the Toyota Corolla Cross gives it the win here. Handling and Drivability: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick 2027 Subaru Getaway: All The Details Crosstrek: Both of these vehicles do a great job of maintaining a car's general ease of use over an SUV. Perhaps it's because it still so clearly looks like a car, but the Crosstrek is the sort of car that is instantly familiar, like catching up with an old friend. The steering is light on feedback and a little vague off-center but it works in the Crosstrek's favor, giving it a loose and limber feel. The pedal placement is optimal and the left-side pedal offers consistent stopping power that's easy to modulate. Swapping back and forth, the Subaru does exhibit more hesitation when asked to quickly change direction. Chalk this up to the additional 333 pounds (151 kilograms) the Subaru is hauling around: that mechanical AWD system has its trade-offs. The flip-side is of course better capability in adverse weather or out on a trail. Well, at least in theory: we had picture-perfect weather when we got these two together and stayed on the paved stuff. Nonetheless, given the ability to actually send significant amounts of ICE power to the back axle, the Crosstrek should be able to pry itself out of conditions the Toyota will struggle with. Don't forget that the Subaru also has a roughly 10-percent ride height advantage: 8.7 inches (221 millimeters) against 8.0 in (203 mm). subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Corolla Cross: It might not look a whole lot like a Corolla, but the CC sure drives like one. Mostly, that's a good thing: despite being fractionally longer than the Crosstrek, the Toyota has a shorter wheelbase, and it thus feels more compact from behind the wheel. The steering is just as light here as in the Subaru, though more direct. The lighter curb weight has the Corolla Cross turning in quicker and with more conviction on the road, even on the fractionally narrower 215-width rubber. (Both crossovers came equipped with Blizzaks, because Toronto winters.) This is a fractionally easier vehicle to drive on the road, which is where the vast majority of Crosstreks and Corolla Crosses will spend the vast majority of their time. That being said, if the road up to the summer cottage is regularly washed out or littered with rocks, we'd bet on the Crosstrek getting further. The Toyota's rear motor is good for 40 horsepower, whereas the Subaru can send more of its total system power to the rear axle. The lower ride height and longer overhangs also work against the Corolla Cross. Summary: We recognize the Subaru's advantages in certain situations, but where these vehicles will be spending most of their lives, it's the Corolla that just slightly takes this category. Ride Quality and Comfort: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Words: Mike Schlee Crosstrek: With the added weight of the hybrid hardware, the ride quality of the Crosstrek does not suffer. It is still one of the better vehicles in the segment to swallow up bumps in the road thanks to its high ground clearance and generous suspension travel. Off road, it continues to offer a more compliant ride than the Corolla Cross. Inside front seat occupants get 38.7-inches (984 mm) of headroom and 42.9-inches (1,089 mm) of legroom. Those in the rear get a bit less space, with 37.6-inches (965 mm) of headroom and 36.7-inches (926 mm) of legroom. Even if the rear seat numbers seem a bit low, adults can still fit back there and both the seat cushion and arm rests are set to an appropriate height. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Corolla Cross: The Corolla Cross offers a compliant ride that is more comfortable than it is harsh. It just can't quite match up to the Subaru in terms of impact absorption nor rebound control. Inside, the Corolla Cross matches the Crosstrek for front seat space, with 38.6-inches (980 mm) of headroom and 42.9-inches (1,089 mm) of legroom. For those in the rear, there is more headroom, officially rated at 39.0-inches (991 mm), but less legroom with only 32.0-inches (813 mm) available. During our real world testing we found the back seat could still fit adult passengers, just not as well as the Crosstrek Hybrid could. Summary: With an advantage in ride comfort and rear seat space, the Crosstrek Hybrid is the winner of this category. Interior Style and Quality: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Crosstrek: Look, neither one of these little cute-utes is going to be earning oohs and aahs for their cabins. These interiors are utilitarian first, and for a long time that's been part of the Crosstrek's appeal: it's not too fancy, so you don't feel bad when the inevitable wear and tear starts to show. Yet against the Toyota even the Subaru is looking just a little bougie. At least some of that is due to the trim discrepancy at play: we've got a top-shelf Limited here, whereas the Toyota is a mid-level SE. Even still, the Crosstrek's cabin has a semblance of style, with different material and texture usage to perk up the mood. Material quality is fine up front and worse in the back row. Except for the shifter boot, which is just awkward to the touch. Orange contrast stitching is a nice touch, too. Subaru's armrests are ample and suitably squishy. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Corolla Cross: The good news is that for 2026, Toyota has dropped in a big, rectilinear center console, so the CC doesn't seem so barren between the seats. Like the Subaru, there are plenty of physical controls peppered around the shifter and below the main touchscreen, ensuring most basic functions can be handled on muscle memory alone. That's a win! But this is where the CC does take influence from the Corolla: its cabin is devoid of style. While we appreciate the aforementioned island of physical controls on the dashboard, the rest of it is just one large, admittedly soft-touch protuberance. The bit of faux brightwork around the vents and on the chunky door pulls isn't enough to detract from that, either. Like the Subaru, the CC sees a dip in material quality when moving to the back row. I personally prefer Toyota's smooth steering wheel leather to the Subaru's grainy feel, but countering that is the Subaru rim's command-center feel with so many physical controls literally at our fingertips. Speaking of leather, neither of these models use it for their seating: the Subaru uses the brand's stain-resistant and water-repellant StarTex, while the Toyota sticks to a hearty fabric. Summary: It's a higher trim so it has an advantage here, but even still the Subaru would clinch this category for its more interesting visual layout. Tech and Safety: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Words: Mike Schlee Crosstrek: Being a fully loaded Hybrid Limited model, our tester came with every option. Some highlights include a wiper de-icer, power moonroof, power driver's seat, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, StarTex upholstery, wireless phone charger, 12.3-inch digital driver information center, dual zone climate control, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 11.6-inch infotainment system, and a Harmon Kardon audio system. Safety wise, the Crosstrek Hybrid Limited includes Subaru's EyeSight safety suite, driver distraction mitigation system, reverse automatic braking, blindspot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, and 360 degree surround view monitor. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Corolla Cross: Being a mid-trim Corolla Cross Hybrid SE AWD spec, our tester came lightly equipped. Some features included are a heated steering wheel, 7.0-inch digital driver information center, wireless phone charger, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, heated front seats, and a 10.5-inch infotainment system. Missing on our tester are items like a power seat, moonroof, and premium sound system. From a safety standpoint, our tester has Toyota's Safety Sense 3.0 System, blindspot monitor, rear cross traffic alert, and rear seat reminder. Summary: Being a higher trim model, the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid takes an easy win in this category but is going to pay for it in the next section; literally. Value Dollars and Sense: subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Crosstrek: In America, buyers have the choice of a few Crosstrek Hybrid trims, including this Limited model. The only additional costs here are the premium paint ($395) and the optional package ($1,600) for the moonroof and surround-view camera. Total price including destination would be a high $38,410. Canadian pricing has long been a Subaru strength and the story is the same here, with this tester coming in at $42,890 CAD including destination. Note that there is just this one hybrid trim in the land of Tim Horton's, however. subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Corolla Cross: Including destination, the Corolla Cross SE lists for $32,165 in America. This tester embiggens that sticker with the excellent red paint plus contrasting roof ($975), the cold weather package ($500 for heated steering wheel and front seats), and the larger 10.5-inch screen ($615). Total? $34,255. The gap shrinks in Canada, but not by much: the Corolla Cross SE rings in at $38,980 CAD as equipped. Summary: Strictly by the numbers, the Corolla Cross wins this. Even moving up to the top XSE to unlock a power liftgate, the CC would just narrowly undercut the Subaru. Final Thoughts: Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid vs Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid subaru crosstrek hybrid vs toyota corolla cross hybrid comparison, Image Kyle Patrick Image: Kyle Patrick Words: Mike Schlee The Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid enjoyed a massive advantage in the small SUV segment for a few years as the only full hybrid option. None of the competition could come close to matching the compact SUV's fuel economy – an important factor for buyers in this market. But the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid is here now and offers a dramatic increase in fuel efficiency compared to its non-hybrid siblings. Granted, the Subaru is still a good deal behind the Corolla Cross Hybrid in terms of ultimate fuel efficiency, making the Toyota the ultimate winner if fuel economy is far and away the most important purchasing decision. But if it is not, we'd recommend the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid as the better all-around purchase here. It has more capability, a nicer ride, a more pleasant interior, and comes better equipped. 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid: All the Details
