Smart staged the global debut of its Concept #2 prototype on April 22, 2026 in Beijing, previewing the production two-seat city EV that will succeed the original fortwo and return the brand to the segment that defined it.The reveal headlined a closed-door "Change of Perspectives" Global Brand Event hosted by smart, the joint venture between Mercedes-Benz Group (ETR: MBG) and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, parent of Hong Kong-listed Geely Automobile Holdings (HKG: 175). The Concept #2 is now on display at Auto China 2026, which opens to media on April 24.Smart #2 Prototype (Smart)Designed by the Mercedes-Benz Global Design Team, the Concept #2 measures 2,792 mm (110 inches) long — only 97 mm (4 inches) more than the last EQ fortwo, which was discontinued in 2024. The wheelbase stretches to roughly 1.9 meters (75 inches) and the turning circle is a tight 6.95 meters (22.8 feet). The "wheels-at-the-corners" layout, two-door silhouette and rear-wheel-drive configuration are direct callbacks to the original fortwo, dressed here in a matte white and warm gold two-tone finish with fine leather hardware. Beneath the body sits smart's new Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), a proprietary EV platform engineered in-house for the brand's smaller models. With the Concept #2, smart has previewed an electric range of up to nearly 300 km (186 miles), more than double the roughly 135 km (84 miles) WLTP range of the outgoing fortwo EQ. DC fast charging from 10 to 80 percent is targeted at under 20 minutes, and the car supports vehicle-to-load (V2L) output for external devices.Smart #2 Prototype (Smart)Global CEO Tong Xiangbei used the Beijing stage to frame the Concept #2 as the gateway to a portfolio that has expanded from the smart #1 in 2022 to include the larger #3 SUV and the flagship #5. "There is a smart for everyone," he said at the event. The production smart #2 will make its world premiere at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026, with first customer deliveries scheduled before the end of the year in China and Europe. Although Mercedes-Benz directs styling, manufacturing has shifted to Geely-managed plants in China, two years after the petrol fortwo line at Hambach, France was sold off. No pricing has been disclosed. The previous fortwo EQ left the German market at €21,490 (c. $25,200), and analysts expect the production #2 to land in the premium small-EV bracket against the Renault 5 rather than chase the cheapest end of the European city car market.Smart #6 (Smart)The same Beijing event also delivered the world premiere of the smart #6 EHD, a 4,906 mm (193 inch) fastback sedan with a 2,926 mm (115 inch) wheelbase that is the brand's first non-SUV body style and its first range-extender hybrid. The #6 EHD pairs a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine with an electric motor for a combined 320 kW (429 hp) and a CLTC-rated total range of 1,810 km (1,125 miles), including 285 km (177 miles) of pure-electric driving. It launches first in China.Together the two reveals push smart into segments well outside its original niche, even as the Concept #2 reaches back to the brand's defining product. Will buyers willing to pay a premium for a city car still turn out in volume, six years after Mercedes and Geely retired the petrol fortwo and bet the brand on bigger SUVs?Conversion rate: 1 EUR = 1.171 USD as of April 22, 2026
