blackCAT · iStock.comFor many drivers, the decision to repair or replace a car may happen the minute you get a super high estimate for repairs. With modern vehicles becoming more complex and repair costs rising, the old rules drivers relied on to make that decision are starting to feel outdated. Experts shared with MoneyLion tips for determining when it's time to stop repairing and buy another car.The Old '$1K Repair Rule' May No Longer ApplyFor years, car experts offered a basic rule of thumb: If a repair cost more than $1,000, it might be time to replace the car. That rule may not apply to some modern vehicles in this high-cost economy.Luke Oswald, automotive specialist at Wheels Away, said car repairs should not be made based on the value of the car but on the "50% rule." That is, "If the repairs total up to more than half of the value of your car before the damage occurred, then it's better to get rid of it," he explained.Look At Total Ownership CostsOswald said drivers should consider multiple financial factors beyond just the repair bill before making a decision. Ongoing operating costs matter too, such as insurance and expected fuel efficiency, he noted."While older cars might be cheaper in general to insure, you're likely to get much better fuel mileage if you're using modern equipment. It all adds up and it's certainly worth considering," Oswald said. It's also worth looking at resale value and financing terms, according to Devon Jakes, sales operations team lead at USAWheels."If your vehicle has any resale value or financing terms, this is also something to consider when evaluating the cost of a replacement versus a repair," Jakes told MoneyLion. When Reliability Problems Start Costing More Than RepairsAt some point, reliability issues can outweigh the savings of keeping an older vehicle on the road."Cars are actually quite good at letting you know when it's time to let go," Oswald said. "If you've reached the point where you're just going from problem to problem, or find yourself spending more time than ever in auto shops, it's time to let go."Frequent breakdowns, especially those that disrupt your daily life or work obligations, may not be worth the expense over time, Jakes added.Reliability is more important than savings, so if the manufacturer stops supporting "the specialized software needed to calibrate your safety sensors," for example, it's probably time to move on, she added.Market Trends and Interest Rates Can Change the MathEconomic conditions and market value can also influence whether it makes sense to repair or replace a vehicle. High used-car values can make selling or trading in your current vehicle more profitable now, as demand is higher, Jakes pointed out."Some cars can actually get a great price even when broken by selling it as a salvage vehicle," Oswald added. But if trade-in value is low, keeping a paid-off car longer may still make sense. The rising costs of insurance and financing should also "form a large part of your decision-making process," Oswald said. If your repair costs are likely to cost the same as a two or three months' worth of insurance and finance payments, it's worth replacing.A Simple Framework for Making the DecisionThe best way to decide is to compare the financial reality of both options side by side. Oswald suggests starting with a simple value comparison."Repair the car if the bill is much cheaper than the car's market value and is relatively new with low mileage. Replace if your bill is over 50% of the car's market value and has been regularly breaking down or having things go wrong," he said.Looking at the full financial picture can help drivers decide whether to keep fixing their current vehicle or finally move on.This article was provided by MoneyLion.com for informational purposes only and should not be construed as financial, legal or tax advice.More From MoneyLion:Save Up to $1,100 on Car Insurance in MinutesGet a Free Gold IRA Guide From Forbes' Most Trusted Gold Company, Plus Up to $25K in Bonus SilverLooking to Buy Investment Properties?
