A total of 78 luxury vehicles driven by locals and foreigners were seized by the road transport department (JPJ) under Ops Luxury 4.0. The operation was held from December 12, and the vehicle seizures were made for a range of offences including the absence of valid road tax and insurance coverage. “All the vehicles have been detained and seized for investigation under Section 64(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said. The main offences identified during the operation included driving without a valid motor vehicle licence, no insurance coverage, using expired or invalid driving licences, and the use of fake vehicle registration plates, according to The Star. Ops Luxury 4.0 marked the fourth phase of the nationwide enforcement exercise which began on July 1, according to Aedy Fadly. “Since Ops Luxury began, a total of 705 luxury vehicles have been seized nationwide for various offences,” he said. One vehicle of note was an Audi A8 that had RM21,710 in unpaid road tax, the highest amount recorded in the current phase of the operation, while another luxury vehicle has not had its road tax renewed since 2021, said the JPJ director-general. Owners of these vehicles claimed that they had simply forgotten to renew the vehicles’ road tax, the JPJ director-general said. “Vehicle owners may be able to afford luxury cars, but renewing road tax and insurance is not optional. Driving without them poses serious risks to other road users,” he said.
