Nissan has confirmed plans to bring back the Xterra SUV in the near future. The new one continues to use a body-on-frame chassis, like the earlier ones, and the model still has the Toyota 4Runner squarely in its sights as a primary competitor. Now, the automaker is teasing a rugged-looking SUV concept that's debuting at the 19th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition 2026, which begins April 24. To be very clear, we don't think what Nissan is showing at the event is a preview of the new Xterra. However, the vehicle shows that the automaker still understands how to design a rugged-looking vehicle, after years of prioritizing sleeker-looking SUVs. What Is Nissan Teasing? NissanThe Nissan SUV concept premiering in China doesn't even have a name yet, and there's only one image of it so far. Even in the shadowy teaser photo, you can see the vehicle has chiseled, upright styling. The rig looks ready to go off-road thanks to the tall ride height. The vehicle also features small illuminated rectangle elements on the nose. This element also appears on the latest Pathfinder and harkens back to a similar styling flourish on the SUV's first generation. There are also fender-mounted lights on the outer edges of the front fenders, and there's similar illumination on the roof.NissanThe company's announcement says, "[It] will bring two brand-new concept cars and make their global debut, which will be another important milestone in Nissan's transformation towards electrification and intelligentization." The statement suggests this SUV might be an EV, but there are no technical details at this time. The other vehicle in the teaser is Nissan's second concept for the Chinese-market motor show. Like the other one, there are no details about it. The styling indicates the vehicle is more of a traditional crossover and is presumably also an EV.We can't rule out a production version of this concept arriving in the future. However, it would likely be exclusive to the Chinese market. The New Xterra NissanThe teaser for this SUV concept premiering in China comes just days after Nissan's confirmation of the Xterra's revival, after retiring the nameplate for the 2015 model year. The available photos reveal a chiseled shape with many hard edges and debossed Nissan branding on the front end.The new Xterra will be a series hybrid, with a combustion engine acting as a range extender for the electric powertrain. The total system output is likely to be around 350 horsepower. The new Xterra will have a focus on the North American market, and Nissan will build it in the US. It's part of a series of new body-on-frame models, including the next-generation Pathfinder. There would also be a luxury-focused Infiniti version that could be available in two- and three-row seating configurations. The new Xterra is supposed to arrive in late 2028, meaning there's still a lot of time to learn more about the much-anticipated vehicle. It's one of the more interesting projects for North America that Nissan is working on at the moment.
