The Firefly, marketed in China as a sub-brand model by Nio and partially available on European markets, now offers an option for a larger traction battery in its home country. This marks the second upgrade for the small electric vehicle within a year, following Nio’s replacement of the 105-kW motor with a 120 kW powertrain. The newly introduced battery pack increases the range according to the CLTC standard from 420 km (approx. 340 km WLTP) to 560 km (approx. 454 km WLTP).
The new battery option is a 60 kWh CATL battery, which, despite its higher capacity, retains the same dimensions and weight as the previous 42 kWh battery, according to the manufacturer. This is achieved by switching from LFP cells to ternary lithium cells, which offer higher energy density.
The option for a 60 kWh battery is available not only for new vehicle orders but also for existing customers. A new Firefly with the larger battery starts at 136,800 Yuan (approx. €18,350 Euro).
Owners who purchased their vehicle including the battery can opt for a permanent upgrade to the 60 kWh battery. This is possible no sooner than one year after the vehicle’s purchase date. The physical swap can be conveniently performed at a battery swap station, which in its fifth generation is also compatible with the Firefly. The regular price premium for this upgrade is 17,000 Yuan (~€2,280 Euro). Early buyers who ordered their car by 22 October 2026 and complete the swap by the end of 2027 will also benefit from a points credit worth 2,000 Yuan (~€270 Euro).
Customers who lease the battery monthly can also permanently switch to the 60 kWh pack. The change incurs a one-time service fee of 3,000 Yuan (~€400), and the monthly lease fee increases from 399 to 599 Yuan (from ~€54 to €80). As part of a limited-time promotion, the one-time service fee is effectively reduced to 2,000 Yuan for eligible first-time buyers through a 1,000 Yuan voucher.
