While the rest of the world seems to have given up on auto shows—Frankfurt downsized and moved to Munich, Tokyo shrunk down to a mobility show, and Detroit just rolled up and died—Beijing just went bonkers. Last week, there were hypercars that got to 60 in under a second, practical crossover EVs, and even sedans that allow you to interact with your HMI without driving you crazy. The Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, also known as Auto China, featured almost 100 acres of cars strewn across 17 halls at two venues—the China International Exhibition Center and the Capital International Exhibition Center—over the course of 10 days. There were 1,451 vehicles featured, 181 world premieres, 71 concept cars, and over 1.28 million visitors. Here are 40 or so of those 1,451.Car shows are done? Not in China, comrade!Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo Electric Concept HypercarXiaomi made the Asian debut of its Vision Gran Turismo concept hypercar at Beijing. While it’s just a concept, it’s an impressive one. With a drag coefficient of 0.29 and 1,900 hp at the wheels, it should be quick. Inside, Xiaomi introduces what it calls a “sofa racer” concept. Yangwang U9 Xtreme Electric HypercarThis is the current ultimate hypercar. Introduced last year, the U9 Xtreme features quad-motors combining for 2,977-plus hp, with 1,200-volt architecture. It’s reported to have achieved 308.34 mph at Germany’s ATP test track in Papenburg, making it one of the fastest production cars in the world. It also used its DiSus-X intelligent body control system, enabling fully active suspension that manages longitudinal, lateral, and vertical movements, to lap the Nürburgring in 6:59.157. Those records were helped by the fact that the car’s lithium-iron-phosphate Blade battery offers extreme discharge rates.Under its composite skin is a chassis made of 3D-printed aluminum, a proprietary battery capable of a 30C discharge rate, and over 3,000 horsepower distributed across all four wheels. Its 308 mph top speed was limited by its tires, and Yangwang is developing new tires that can take the car to 329 mph. Add a low-drag configuration could be capable of 373 mph. At Beijing, Wang Chaunfu himself, CEO of Chinese mega-carmaker BYD, pulled the wraps off the U9 Xtreme. A limited run will go to the 30 customers worldwide who have paid $2.9 million each to own one. It’s the most expensive Chinese ever. The U9 Xtreme will likely continue to evolve as a testbed for BYD technology. Fang Cheng Bao Formula XPreviously known for its SUVs, Fang Cheng Bao, a subsidiary of BYD, showed off the Formula X sports car along with the Formula S and SL sporty sedans. All are expected to have three motors and over 1,000 hp.The Formula X shown here is a high-performance, all-electric two-door convertible supercar with a carbon fiber body and tri-motor AWD offering nearly 1,000 horsepower. It boasts a 0-62 mph time under 2 seconds, 800-volt fast charging (10-97 percent in 9.5 min), and a greater-than 1,000 km (621-mile) CLTC range on the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle, which is way more optimistic than ours. Launching around 2027, it features a “battle cockpit” design with a 15.6-inch screen, 26-inch HUD, and active aerodynamics.Fang Cheng Bao In addition to the Formula X above, BYD’s Fang Cheng Bao brand heavily featured its expansion from rugged SUVs into high-performance EVs at the Beijing show, headlined by the Formula X supercar concept, Formula S/SL electric sedans, and an updated lineup of SUVs (Bao 3, 5, 7, 8). The brand showcased its “FORM” architecture with over 1,000 hp and 800-volt fast charging capabilities. We mention the SUV because the AirCab is a “land-based aircraft carrier”-type flying car (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft·eVTOL). The method involves carrying the AirCab in the SUV while driving and then taking it out when needed for takeoff. It takes a minimum of 30 seconds to unfold the foldable rotors after taking it out of the trunk. Xpeng has reportedly received orders exceeding 7,000 units from countries including China, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).Other flying vehicle makers were present, too. Battery company CATL unveiled its V2000EM, which can carry up to six people. Developed by Fengfei Aviation, a strategic investment by CATL, it has a cruising speed of 200 km/h. The Geely Galaxy Light is a luxury-leaning EV concept, a 1,000 horsepower electric off-road platform. Torque is apparently split 50/50 front/rear. That’s assuming this is an all-electric drivetrain. Sources suggest the Galaxy Light can also support range-extender or hybrid applications. As an EV, with one motor in the front and two in the back, it delivers a combined output of more than 1,000 horsepower and a 0-62 mph time in the four-second range.Far more interesting to budding billionaires might be the Galaxy Light second-generation concept car shown here. While we can assume it has a similar drivetrain, it’s the looks of the ultra-luxury vehicle that will give both Rolls-Royce and Toyota’s new Century brand a run for their Yuan. Dreame Nebula concept car A series of car brands you’ve never heard of produced this, the Dreame Nebula. Yet another concept with rear-hinged rear doors and no B-pillar, the Nebula will likely run on electric power, but details were scant.WeRide RobobusWeRide operates driverless Robobus shuttles and Robotaxis in Beijing, primarily in the Yizhuang/Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area (BDA), according to werideai.
