NIO’s “Shanghai R&D + Anhui Manufacturing” battery strategy enters substantive implementation. Recently, NIO signed a cooperation agreement with the government of Anting Town, Jiading District, Shanghai, officially launching the construction of a new battery R&D base in Jiading. This marks another significant move in NIO’s battery layout in Shanghai, following the establishment of NIO Battery Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. at the end of February 2026, and signals that the company’s “Shanghai R&D + Anhui Manufacturing” dual-platform strategy has entered a substantive implementation phase. NIO Battery Technology Co., Ltd. Business Registration Information On February 26, 2026, NIO Battery Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. officially completed its industrial and commercial registration, with a registered capital of RMB 100 million, fully owned by Shanghai NIO Automobile Co., Ltd. The legal representative is Zeng Shizhe, currently Vice President of NIO’s Battery Systems, a personnel appointment that also underscores the new company’s central role within NIO’s battery business system. The company is registered at Moyu South Road in Anting Town, Jiading District, with a business scope covering battery sales, R&D of electronic specialty materials, sales of new energy vehicle electrical accessories, AI application software development, inspection and testing services, and other fields. Unlike NIO Battery Technology (Anhui) Co., Ltd., established in 2022, the Shanghai company is positioned as an “R&D, global trade, digitalization, and ecosystem service hub,” adopting a light-asset model that does not involve large-scale battery production, but instead focuses on cutting-edge technology R&D and synergy with the battery swap ecosystem. This layout aligns with the scaled expansion of NIO’s battery swap network. As of February 2026, NIO’s total number of battery swap stations nationwide has exceeded 3,700, including over 1,000 highway swap stations, with cumulative battery swaps surpassing 100 million times. In terms of technology roadmap, NIO has clearly identified solid-state batteries as the breakthrough point for next-generation core technologies. According to informed sources, NIO has already launched comprehensive initiatives in the solid-state battery field, collaborating with multiple industry players and research institutions to explore multiple technical routes in parallel, including oxide and sulfide approaches. The company has also explicitly stated its goal of achieving scaled application of solid-state battery-related technologies after 2027. CATL and NIO Sign 5-Year Comprehensive Strategic Cooperation Agreement While advancing independent R&D, NIO also signed a comprehensive strategic cooperation agreement with CATL in early 2026 for a five-year term, under which both parties will jointly develop long-life batteries and battery swap-compatible technologies. Per the agreement, CATL will exclusively develop long-life battery packs for NIO, with mass production and vehicle installation also planned for 2027. This “self-developed + partnership” model will significantly shorten the R&D cycle.
