Image Credit: KoenigseggWith Ferrari introducing the Luce, albeit with a very mixed reaction, you might be wondering if other supercar manufacturers are set to go electric. Well, Lamborghini has, for now, ruled this out, and another major player has done so in the form of Koenigsegg.Speaking to Motor1 Italy recently, Christian von Koenigsegg himself was asked what the potential was for an electric supercar or any form of vehicle from his company. After all, EVs still seem to be the way we are going when it comes to future propulsion. But for those who love at least some element of combustion under the hood, there is good news, as for now, there is no chance you will see a 100 percent electric Koenigsegg. It just doesn't fit into the plans for the company with the vehicles it currently produces.AdvertisementAdvertisementHowever, it wasn't always like this. In fact, ten years ago, the idea of an electric Koenigsegg by 2026 was one that the boss of the company thought would happen. But here we are, with Ferrari introducing its first EV, while some of its biggest rivals don't see the need to do so. At least not yet.Why there won't be a Koenigsegg EVImage Credit: KoenigseggIt would have made sense for Koenigsegg to have at least considered the idea of an EV. And it seemingly has done so at some point in the last ten years. The company easily has the capability to take on the challenge, and an electric hypercar from the Swedish manufacturer would give rivals like Rimac a real run for its money. But Koenigsegg doesn't see it as the right path for the cars the company wants to make."If you'd asked me 10 years ago, I probably would have thought that by 2026 we'd already have an electric Koenigsegg," said Christian von Koenigsegg. Around 2016, electric cars looked like they would be the ultimate goal for high-performance vehicles. Countries around the globe looked likely to phase out ICE power and favor electric cars. But an electric Koenigsegg would lack the sound, feel, vibrations, and overall character of what a hypercar or supercar currently has. "It never becomes an animal," said Koenigsegg of an electric hypercar. As far as Koenigsegg is concerned, a supercar with a combustion engine is almost a living and breathing thing. Koenigsegg cars are not meant for everyday life, so why would you want one to have the powertrain of a Tesla or Rivian?Mechanical power is what a Koenigsegg is all aboutImage Credit: Koenigsegg"The real value of a hypercar is elsewhere: in the design, in the engineering, in the sensations it delivers, in the almost emotional bond between driver and machine," added Koenigsegg. The ICE is what a Koenisegg should be about. But what about the environmental question? There is no denying that an EV is better for the environment than a combustion engine.AdvertisementAdvertisementKoenigsegg had an answer for this too, believing that EVs have to be driven a lot to pay back the environmental damage caused by their construction. While that is possible, a car like a Koenigsegg won't be driven anywhere near as much in most situations. " A vehicle with a very large battery has to be driven a lot to 'pay back,' environmentally speaking, the impact of producing that battery," he said."But hypercars are driven very little—often they sit for years in collectors' garages—and that break-even point might never come," added the company's founder. So yes, it's true that an EV would one day be better for the environment. But for cars that may never break more than 10,000 miles in their lifetime, it probably isn't worth it.Will we ever see an electric Koenigsegg?Image Credit: KoenigseggElectrification has been on the minds of those at the Swedish company. It is currently working on an all-electric platform. But it has decided that hybrid power is the best way forward for now. The Koenigsegg Gemera is a prime example of this, with a hybrid V8 engine producing 2,300hp in total. You get some benefits of an EV, like regenerative braking, but you retain the rawness of a combustion-powered supercar. So while we may see an electric hypercar from the company in the future, for now, it's not in the plans for Koenigsegg. If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
