The compact SUV segment remains one of the most competitive in the market in 2026. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V continue to dominate with over 400,000 sales each in 2025. With buyers prioritizing practicality and usability now more than ever, fuel efficiency could be a deal-breaker when choosing between two cars.Kia first introduced the hybrid powertrain for the Sportage in 2023, which gave it a boost in terms of getting the most out of your tank. With the new 2026 Kia Sportage, the company may have divided opinions on its exterior looks, but there is no denying its strengths in terms of practicality and efficiency. So, just how efficient are the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid and ICE models? We rank each trim from the least efficient to the most efficient. You may be surprised to find out which trim is the most efficient. The plug-in hybrid Kia Sportage is not included in this list. All mpg ratings are sourced directly from the EPA and the cars have been ranked in terms of their combined mpg, using city and highway mpg as a tiebreaker where necessary. All data is correct at the time of writing. We list these from least to most efficient. 2026 Kia Sportage X-Pro Prestige AWD 24 MPG Combined KiaKey features at a glance: 17-in matte-black alloy wheels with all-terrain tires All-wheel drive with snow, sand and mud terrain modes Panoramic sunroof 12.3-in dual central and drivers displays Heated and ventilated front seats with heated steering wheel The X-Pro Prestige is the least efficient Sportage trim in 2026. This is due to several factors. The main objective of the X-Pro trim is to be capable off-road, which is the exact opposite of what gets you maximum fuel efficiency. Firstly, while the tires are relatively small in diameter at 17 inches, the all-terrain compound makes them less efficient, especially on highways and city driving. All-wheel drive also does not help here, as the engine has to work harder to send power to all four wheels. While the ground clearance remains the same as the other AWD variants at 8.3 inches, the extra cladding makes the X-Pro less aerodynamic on highways.Since the X-pro is the top of the line variant of the turbocharged SUV as well, it gets all the technology and convenience kits as standard. This increases the overall weight of the SUV, making the engine work harder to gain and maintain speed. If you want the most capable Kia Sportage that can go anywhere, the X-Pro is the trim for you. If efficiency is your main priority, there are other trims that do better. 2026 Kia Sportage LX/EX/X-Line/SX Prestige AWD 26 MPG Combined KiaKey features at a glance: 17-in machined alloy wheels (LX trim) 18-in black alloy wheels (EX trim) 19-in gloss black wheels and trim (X-Line) Panoramic sunroof with power sunshade (SX Prestige trim) Solar Control Glass (SX Prestige trim) Every other all-wheel drive trim of the Sportage is next on the list. The lack of all-terrain tires is one of the main factors for the increase in fuel efficiency here. The increased rim sizes also do not seem to affect the overall EPA estimates for the SX Prestige and X-Line trims, which get 19-inches as standard. While all-wheel drive is an $1,800 option on the LX and EX trims, it is standard on the X-Line and SX Prestige trims. The X-Line trim is the sporty trim for the Sportage, with gloss back trim throughout and high-utility roof rails. There are a few factors such as all-wheel drive that work against fuel efficiency here. While it is a boon to have on slippery conditions and loose surfaces, it utilizes more gas and power from the engine to keep all four wheels under load. While these are the best non-hybrid AWD Sportage variants, there may be a benefit in looking at the hybrid powertrains. 2026 Kia Sportage LX/EX/SX/SX Prestige FWD 28 MPG Combined KiaKey features at a glance: 17-in machined alloy wheels (LX trim) 18-in black alloy wheels (EX trim) Dual-zone auto climate control with auto de-fog system (SX trim) Panoramic sunroof with power sunshade (SX Prestige trim) Solar Control Glass (SX Prestige trim) The most efficient non-hybrid Sportages are the front-wheel-drive versions of the aforementioned trims. There is a slight difference here, as the SX trim is only available as a FWD version, while the X-Line is AWD only. The biggest advantage of FWD trims is the lack of powered rear wheels. This means less effort required by the engine, and less power loss while sending power to the wheels. All-wheel drive systems are usually heavy as well, and the reduction in weight helps with getting the most out of your tank. This also means that the LX trim is the cheapest Sportage turbo SUV, below the $30,000 mark. All trims get dual 12.3-inch displays for the driver and a central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Driver attention warning and auto emergency braking technology are also standard across all trim levels. The SX Prestige trim adds features such as auto rain sensing wipers, heated side view mirrors and LED projector headlights. 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid S/EX/X-Line/SX Prestige AWD 35 MPG Combined KiaKey features at a glance: 18-in alloy wheels (S and EX trims) 19-in alloy wheels (X-Line and SX Prestige trims) Snow, Sand and Mud Terrain modes (All trims) Heated side view mirrors (All trims) Leather-wrapper steering wheel (All trims) The Kia Sportage hybrid mpg is significantly better in terms of city and highway EPA efficiency scores. While the engine capacity goes down to 1.6 liters, the 1.49-kWh lithium-ion battery helps the engine, especially at low speeds. While the battery cannot be plugged in, it helps the engine regain energy while braking as well. The SUV also behaves as an EV for short distances within the city, reducing the need for the engine to use fuel. While the hybrid Sportage starts at $32,790, it is only $2,000 more than the non-hybrid AWD trims. For that money, you also get significantly more power, at 232 hp. The hybrid system does add weight, but it makes up for it in city use with regenerative braking. To summarize, there is no major negative in opting for the hybrid powertrain. You get more power and significantly better fuel efficiency while keeping all-wheel drive. The hybrid Sportage is also available across almost all the trims, so you can choose the amount of money you want to spend on extra features, without affecting the overall efficiency score. 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid LX FWD 42 MPG Combined KiaKey features at a glance: 17-in aero alloy wheels Eco, Sport and MyDrive drive modes Leather-wrapped steering wheel LED projector headlights and LED taillights Rear privacy glass The most efficient Kia Sportage you can currently buy is the FWD version of the hybrid SUV. The hybrid Sportage only has one trim with FWD on offer, the LX trim. The Hybrid LX FWD has all the fundamentals required for good fuel efficiency. It uses the more efficient hybrid powertrain. It sends power to only the front wheels, reducing power wastage. It also features smaller, 17-inch aero rims that reduce overall drag and makes the car more aerodynamic. As this is the base trim, the LX also has the least additional features, reducing the overall weight of the SUV. When compared to the non-hybrid FWD trims, the hybrid LX only starts at $2,000 more.If you want the most fuel efficient Kia Sportage currently on sale, the hybrid LX trim gets you the most out of a single tank, at 575 miles, which is even more than the plug-in hybrid Sportage.
