Chinese automakers have proven that they can produce world-beating EVs at every level. They can make fast-charging ones, affordable ones, and just plain fast ones. Right now, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra holds the record for production EVs at the Nurburgring. When it comes to combustion vehicles, though, China hasn't quite reached the same peaks. Great Wall Motor (GWM) is aiming to change that, both on the street and on the track. At the Auto China 2026 show, it revealed a new twin-turbo V8 hybrid supercar platform that will surely put the world on notice.Great Wall Motor / YouTube Meet The GWM GF Platform GWM calls this platform GF for "Great Faith," which was explained in the automaker's press conference (re-posted to YouTube by a Chinese account) as a reference to its big push into motorsports. It's fitting as this platform will underpin both a road car and a GT3-class race car. Both versions of the car will feature a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. It's a 90-degree V8 with dry-sump lubrication, and it has both turbochargers nestled in the valley, known as a "hot-vee" configuration. In the GT3 car, the engine will be limited to around 592 horsepower, and GWM says it will be the most powerful Chinese car engine ever made. The road car, though, will be far more powerful. This is because it won't be restricted by motorsports regulations, but also because it will have electric assistance. Right now, GWM says total output is around 1,184 hp. The hybrid system also gives the car all-wheel drive.Great Wall Motor / YouTubeGWM is also following in the footsteps of other supercar builders by making the GF a mid-engine vehicle with a carbon fiber monocoque chassis. The company also says this will be the first of its kind from a Chinese automaker. The representative giving the press conference speech noted that the layout was chosen for pretty clear reasons. It will be lightweight, stiff, and give the car great weight distribution and dynamic characteristics. They're all the same reasons you see companies like McLaren doing the same.We still have some time to wait to see the whole car, but not too long. At the very end of the press conference, the presenter said that the GT3 race car should take the stage at next year's Shanghai auto show. GWM Isn't The Only Company Setting Out To Make A Name In GT3 The GT3 racing class is already packed with competitors from around the world, and they're based on a seriously diverse set of cars from Ford Mustangs to Ferrari 296s, and plenty in between. The class is accepted in championship series around the world, and combined with the large support, it's a great place to get some publicity. It even offers a potential revenue stream, as automakers can sell GT3 race cars to smaller private teams.GenesisAll of those reasons are why GWM is developing a car for it, but also why Hyundai's luxury division, Genesis, is, too. Genesis already previewed the car that will underpin its future GT3 racer in the Magma GT concept. Like the GWM GF, it will be mid-engine, though we don't know exactly what kind of powertrain it will feature. We do know that Genesis is targeting the 911 for its road car, though, so it likely won't be as intense as the road-going GWM.Toyota isn't new to motorsports, but it is getting more serious about the GT3 class. It's building the GR GT road car specifically to become a race car. Like the GWM, it will have a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with hybrid assist, but the similarities end there. The GR GT will have an aluminum monocoque chassis, a front-engine layout (though with the engine behind the front axle line), and only rear-wheel drive. The engine alone will make more than 600 hp, but we have yet to learn what the final output will be.
