Ford Mustang Sedan's Name Potentially Revealed By Trademark Filing
Ford might be preparing yet another member of the Mustang family for its debut if a recent trademark filing is to be believed. Ford Authority reported that the Blue Oval had filed a trademark for the phrase "Mach 4" on February 25, with the name reserved for motor vehicles or components thereof. It seems likely that the number at the end of the name will correspond to the number of doors, meaning the long-rumored Mustang sedan could be coming soon to join its coupe, convertible, Mach-E, and GTD siblings.

The Four-Door Pony Car Might Debut By The End Of The Year
As we reported last year, Ford has apparently already built a prototype or two of the car, which it privately showed to dealers in order to gauge their interest in selling the sedan. The retailer meeting included images and renderings, as well as three-dimensional models, although no images of the Mustang sedan exist outside of Ford since attendees had to surrender their phones at the door. By the way, they also saw a Baja-style 'Stang, which could become a member of the Raptor family.

At the time of the dealer meeting, rumor was that Ford would use the Mach 4 moniker for the Mustang sedan, which yesterday's patent filing seems to confirm. Ford already uses the "Mach" terminology in its pony car lineup, ranging from the track-ready Mach 1 of previous generations to today's Mustang Mach-E all-electric crossover. The company also created the Mach III concept car in 1993, which previewed the styling direction of the curvy 1994 "SN95" Mustang. A Mach 4, therefore, would fit right in with the company's history.

This Isn't The First Time A Mustang Sedan Has Been Considered
Ford floated the idea of a family-friendly Mustang almost as soon as the coupe itself. As Ford Authority reports, the automaker built a sedan prototype of the first-generation Mustang, although it's possible that the car's close relationship with the Falcon sedan may have put an end to those aspirations. Sedan variants were also rumored in the 1990s and 2000s, then resurfaced again in 2018. It would mark the brand's return to four-doors after completely abandoning the body style with the 2020 discontinuation of the Ford Fusion. The Fiesta and Taurus sedans bit the dust the year earlier, while the Focus four-door was killed off in 2018.

9 Things We Want From The Ford Mustang Sedan
If Ford is serious about building a Mustang Sedan, then these are the things we want from it.
Since then, the Mustang has been the lone car in a Ford lineup that's otherwise stuffed with crossovers, SUVs, and pickup trucks. And if the company decides to market a longer-wheelbase pony car with two additional doors, it has reassured people that the new sedan will maintain the Mustang's sense of style and exuberant performance. And to the company's credit, even though the Mach-E belongs to that "soulless EV crossover" class of cars, it is indeed one of the more interesting electric vehicles to drive, making good on the galloping badge on its front bumper.
