It was hard enough to accept that it would shift to full electric, but when they introduced the six-pack 6-cylinder models, people still haven't fully accepted them.Another blow has been dealt to the Charger's already beat-up reputation and sales figures, as evidenced by a simple test that exposes it in a very big way.MazdaMazda CX-90 > Dodge Charger Sixpack R/TCar and Driver recently published a test wherein they pitted a Mazda CX-90 against Dodge's latest Charger Sixpack R/T. As odd as that test may be, there is method to this madness, and the results speak for themselves. According to the test, the Sixpack R/T will beat the CX-90 to 60 mph (4.7 seconds vs. 6.9 seconds); the family SUV will eventually reel in the performance sedan and even beat it. This is because while the Mazda has a peak output of 280 hp, the Charger's comes out to 420 hp; the latter is limited to just 125 mph, with the Mazda topping out at 127 mph.AdvertisementAdvertisementYou might think a 2 mph difference isn't much, but according to the test, the Mazda starts catching up 21.4 seconds after launch, and needs just 29.7 seconds to reach 120 mph, where it will (eventually) pass the Dodge. Even more interesting is the fact that there is a weight difference in favor of the Mazda. Looking at the numbers reveals that the 4921-pound Charger Sixpack is a sizeable 25 pounds heavier than the CX-90.Mind you, this is a comparison between a higher-performance "muscle car" and a fully-fledged three-row 7-seater family SUV. Car and Driver also point out that this new 6-cylinder Charger is 576 pounds heavier than the previous-generation V8-powered Charger Scat Pack... Yikes.StellantisHeavier Than A RamThere are a multitude of reasons why the new STLA Stellantis platform makes the Charger heavier, but it's likely that the all-wheel-drive system is a major contributing factor as well.
