For years, the luxury segment has been dominated by Rolls-Royce and Bentley. Both have longstanding careers in this segment, defined by high-quality materials and hand-built physiques, now viewed as leaders and the names against which all who enter this segment must measure up. Sure, other automakers have made a success of the segment — just look at Maybach — but no other name in the field carries the same aura as these two British heavyweights.Surprisingly though, a new name has entered the luxury segment, one with American roots and a vision for a luxury EV that could contend with Rolls-Royce and Bentley. This new contender, called Dacora Motors, has teased a car that might be an appealing alternative to the luxury cars offered by the established British elites. What Is Dacora Motors? Dacora MotorsWe've seen many startups, including electric vehicle startups, come and go. Establishing a car company is no easy feat, which is why many have failed, including Jenson Button's Radford Motors and, most notably, Fisker. Recently, we've seen the debut of a new startup, Dacora Motors, co-founded by Kriste D'Ambrosio-Correll and Eric D'Ambrosio-Correll, with Kriste serving as the company's CEO. The startup is backed by a compelling list of achievements, including a Master's Degree in engineering from MIT.Dacora Motors is a New York startup with a well-manicured website and an obscure-looking model that seems to be ripped straight from the early 20th century, thanks to seldom-seen sweeping, Art Deco lines. Interestingly, and likely a sign of good things to come, the bespoke styling of Dacora Motors' electric vehicle is the handiwork of Pininfarina. Meanwhile, the rest of this up-and-coming EV is equally impressive, enough to position it as a possible Rolls-Royce alternative. However, pre-war styling is not enough to dethrone either of Britain's most storied luxury automakers. Icons Of Luxury Rolls-Royce Bentley and Rolls-Royce didn't reach the top of their segments purely by staying in the game for more than a century. These two giants of the luxury segment and the broader automotive world are leaders in their segment due to the status their brands command, the meticulous details incorporated into their exclusive cars, and the effort put into every vehicle. Both brands have established themselves as offering exclusive and tailored experiences that allow for extensive personalization, which is a significant reason these brands can charge more than most supercars, but you probably already knew that. Still, there are cheaper ways to own a modern Rolls-Royce. Handmade, high-quality, and tailor-made, these are the reasons an average Rolls-Royce model takes roughly six months to complete, or roughly 450 hours of work. This lengthy production time is the direct result of Rolls-Royce's extensive personalization options, which extend to virtually every feature of a standard Rolls-Royce model. Similarly, Bentley's models typically require anywhere from 130 to 400 hours of labor to complete, depending on the level of personalization complexity. One notable example is the Bentley Speed Six, which was resurrected by Bentley in 2022. Each of the 24 examples took roughly eight months to complete, as they were built entirely from scratch. The reason why a startup was even compared to two of the world's most renowned luxury car brands is that Dacora Motors matches the level of detail and personalization options offered by Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Dacora's Luxury Aspirations Dacora Motors On the well-manicured website we mentioned earlier, there is a lot of marketing language that we've seen repeatedly. Still, if you sift through all the marketing lingo being peddled, you'll uncover a few interesting aspects about Dacora Motors and the electric vehicle they're developing. Like Rolls-Royce and Bentley, the Dacora Motors EV is distinguished by the personalization and materials used throughout its old-school physique. This includes features like a handcrafted hood made from either hand-hewn walnut or a wood of the customer's choice. That same reliance on wood extends to the cabin, where the dashboard is crafted from solid wood and features tactile buttons and a distinctive dial configuration. It is within this interior that we see materials such as Oleatex bioleather, genuine leather, and local black walnut, among others. Another interesting aspect of the Dacora Motors EV is that its cabin can be configured to the customer's request, which includes adjusting the seat configuration to accommodate up to six people. In contrast, other configurations feature a single captain's chair at the rear and two seats in the front row. However, Rolls-Royce and Bentley not only infuse their cars with expensive materials, but these brands also accompany those materials with cutting-edge technology. This is another point where Dacora Motors excels, as the solid wood dashboard has also been envisioned with an integrated display controlled by gestures.Everything is handcrafted with painstaking attention to detail. And, upon commission of a Dacora vehicle, we deliver a custom creation that’s fit for the individual from the floor to the back cabin.Beyond cabin technology and materials, the Dacora Motors EV is also a surprising athlete, boasting an estimated driving range of 400 miles, which is significantly greater than that of the Rolls-Royce Spectre. It also has 45 inches of rear legroom and a power output capable of generating the equivalent of 800 hp. The Challenges Which Lie In Dacora Motors' Way Dacora Motors So, we've seen beautiful images of a striking luxury car, we have details of a decidedly capable powerplant, and the automaker promises a level of customization and opulence that's certainly up there with that of Bentley and Rolls-Royce. What's stopping them from making a success of things, then?Quite a lot, unfortunately. Jumping from this point to becoming a successful automaker is one seriously long leap. In order to land safely on the other side, Dacora needs to establish a steady and reliable supply chain — easier said than done when rare and exquisite materials are at the very core of what you do — plus the brand actually needs interested parties to commit to orders.Dacora Motors Established firms like Bentley and Rolls have their supply chains sorted, thanks mainly to the influence of their owners, BMW and Volkswagen, who lend platforms and powertrains to ensure a cost-effective product at the end. Dacora needs to establish dependable relationships with suppliers, and it also needs to ensure the products supplied will meet the ever-growing list of regulatory requirements that governs the US auto market.Of course, the women who own and operate Dacora Motors (that's right, the first ever female-founded and led automaker) will be no strangers to the obstacles that are laid out ahead of them, and we wish them all the luck in overcoming them, but these are hurdles that have forced many an ambitious automaker to bite the dust in previous years. With Bated Breath Dacora Motors Although it's not the first electric vehicle from an American automaker to compete in the same segment as Bentley and Rolls-Royce. One of the first models that comes to mind when we discuss alternatives to those icons of luxury is the Cadillac Celestiq. Cadillac's luxury sedan, with a starting price of roughly $340,000, is one of the front-runners in home-grown luxury. It follows a similar formula to the models of Bentley and Rolls-Royce, with handmade pieces, cutting-edge technology, and an extensive list of personalization options.Dacora Motors Now, the new Dacora Motors EV must surpass the Cadillac Celestiq before it can compete with the offerings from Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Still, as we've said, it's easy to start a new car company, but it's significantly harder to keep it alive. That's just for regular car companies looking to appease a wide audience. The problem with companies like Dacora Motors is that they produce low-volume luxury cars with exorbitant price tags, intended for a niche clientele base. For an example of the Dacora Motors EV, expect a starting price of half a million dollars. As of now, we can't confirm how long you'd have to wait for it to arrive, as delivery dates haven't been confirmed. Still, we can't not cheer on a new American brand seeking to dethrone two giants of the automotive industry.Sources: Dacora Motors, Rolls-Royce, Bentley.
