Coolest Cars of the All-American Cruise-InMark VaughnYou might have thought that it made sense to hold an All-American Cruise-In on the 4th of July, but, "We had too much competition on that day from other shows," said the Petersen Automotive Museum's Michael Bodell. So they held it yesterday, Sunday, July 26. It's been held on the last Sunday of July for the last three years.Nonetheless, freedom rang, as Dodge Chargers, Chevrolet Super Sports, and a couple of Corvettes lined up on the Petersen's third-floor parking garage and roared their terrible roars. You don't hear that on some other Cruise-Ins.After the show, 35 of the cars convoyed up Pacific Coast Highway to the former Steve McQueen collection in Santa Paula where Bodell and Dodge SVP Kevin Hellman, thanks to event-sponsor Dodge, gave a talk about the 60th anniversary of the Dodge Charger.AdvertisementAdvertisement"It's just a fun day to celebrate America, to celebrate Route 66 and the anniversary of the Charger, and, if you break down, (event co-sponsor) AAA is there for you," said Bodell. One question: Where were all the Fords?1) Chevrolet Bel Air ConvertiblePhoto credit: Mark VaughnIn 1957, a two-page Chevrolet magazine ad proclaimed "Chevy puts the purr in performance." The stock Bel Air Convertible could be ordered with a 245-hp, 283-cid small block V8 equipped with two four-barrel carburetors, which would certainly deliver on the promise made in the ad.Chevrolet produced 47,000 Bel Air convertibles in the 1957 model year, many of them built in GM's Los Angeles, California, assembly plant, just up the freeway from the Petersen.2) Cool Custom ChevyPhoto credit: Mark Vaughn3) El CaminoPhoto credit: Mark VaughnWith a pair of two-stroke Indian dirt bikes from the '70s.
