CHP Coastal Division is increasing patrols during Monterey Car Week. A special enforcement operation focused on speed and dangerous driving. CHP Air Operations is also supporting enforcement across the region. Monterey Car Week brings out some of the most interesting vehicles on the planet. It also brings packed roads, distracted tourists, and no shortage of people who mistake a canyon road for a private track. The California Highway Patrol wants everyone to know it’s watching. And it’s putting the word out with some very high-end supercar stops on full display. The CHP’s Coastal Division says it’s increasing patrols and enforcement efforts across the Central Coast as enthusiasts and expensive machinery descend on the region. On Wednesday, August 12, it also conducted a division-wide Special Enforcement Unit operation aimed at unsafe speed and other dangerous driving behaviors. CHP Air Operations supported the effort as well. In other words, horsepower on the ground has met its match in the sky. When drivers choose to speed, they aren’t just risking their own lives, they are putting our local neighborhoods at risk,” said Coastal Division Commander Chief Mike Alvarez. “Let’s work together to ensure every visitor and resident makes it home safely to share their memories of the week.” That dedicated operation may be over, but the larger warning is still very much in effect. The CHP says it expects the influx of Car Week traffic to continue creating safety challenges, and its Coastal Division covers a substantial stretch of California, including Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. That’s a much larger area than the roads immediately surrounding the most popular Monterey Car Week locations. Officers in Santa Cruz showed off two high-profile stops, including a Lamborghini Huracan and a Ferrari 360 Modena. Motorcycle police will be part of the enforcement, too. The Hollister-Gilroy division managed to pull over a Mercedes-AMG GT and a Shelby Mustang in its post about the situation. The messaging here is clear.
