China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and National Energy Administration (NEA) have published their 15th Five-Year Plan for Renewable Energy Development. Basically, this is what the country plans to do and achieve in terms of renewable energy development in the years 2026–2030. This is where the country sets four quantitative renewable energy targets for the nation, regarding: installed capacity, power generation, non-power applications, and supply security. The country is going to be focusing on desert solar PV, solar power plants on wasteland areas in the north, and large-scale wind power. “It integrates PV desertification control, ecological restoration, and green power transmission, supporting the establishment of demonstration bases dedicated to 100% cross-provincial green power delivery,” PV Tech shares. “Under the five-year deployment, seven major wind and solar bases—spanning Xinjiang, the Hexi Corridor, the Yellow River Bend, northern Hebei, and the Songliao Basin—will add no less than 370GW of new installed capacity during 2026–2030.” 370 gigawatts!! Across just seven bases! That’s a pretty nuts gigawatts-per-base target. “To resolve consumption and transmission bottlenecks, these bases will be backed by complementary regulation resources, including pumped storage, concentrated solar power, and new-type energy storage, building China’s largest clean power supply cluster.” Wowza. CSP? And “new-type energy storage” — what is that? 370 gigawatts is already nuts, but the country is also looking to support decentralized renewable energy. That includes a variety of wind and solar power plants. Other key targets by 2030 include: “renewable energy consumption will reach 1.8 billion tonnes of standard coal equivalent” “total installed renewable capacity will reach approximately 3.5 billion kilowatts, generating 6 trillion kilowatt-hours annually” (that’s 3,500 GW and 6,000 TWh) wind and solar power will reach 2,800 GW and account for 50% of China’s power capacity wind and solar will 4,000 TWh of electricity, 30% of total generation “Renewable energy used for heating, hydrogen production, industrial raw materials, and other non-power applications will rise 1.5 times from the 2025 level, equivalent to approximately 150 million tonnes of standard coal, significantly expanding the application scope of new energy.” Overall, the story is clear — China will continue to massively expand renewable energy installation and use in the next five years. Don’t expect the cleantech revolution to slow down in China.
