His message was clear: as the industry accelerates, professionals across the board must meet a new set of capability standards.With domestic brands capturing 71% market share in the first five months of the year, Chinese automakers have completed their pivot from low-end to mid-to-high-end products—and the workforce is undergoing a tangible structural overhaul. HR departments have long since moved beyond simple administrative tasks like onboarding and payroll. The proportion of R&D staff at automakers has climbed from 10% to 16%, while at smart-connected components suppliers, it hits 42%. The professional makeup of these teams is shifting noticeably: the share of software and algorithm specialists has surged. In smart-connected R&D roles across eastern China, software engineers now account for 70% of the workforce.New hires are ramping up faster. The average fresh graduate in general R&D takes 19 months to become fully independent, while those in smart-connected fields need just 15 months. The average age of top industry leaders has stabilized at 37. Although frontline skilled workers now make up just 44.6% of the workforce at OEMs, productivity has improved: annual output per worker has risen from 41 to 53 vehicles.As automation spreads across production lines, assembly is no longer the primary focus for workers. Their roles have shifted toward equipment maintenance and production data processing, while global expansion strategies have made foreign language skills a hard requirement. Marketing teams at OEMs continue to expand, with over 30% of senior veterans bringing cross-industry experience from the internet or FMCG sectors—expertise now essential for matching new sales models like "seeding" and user operations.AI has already been fully integrated into every link of the automotive supply chain, Li noted, meaning repetitive, mechanical tasks will increasingly be handled by tools.
