What people were scrambling to get into wasn't just a world-class AI technology expo; it was a "talent matchmaking site" being redefined in real time.Just days before WAIC 2026 opened, a few slightly audacious posts quietly popped up on social media: "Can I bring my resume to drop off at WAIC?"The comment sections quickly lit up. Some pointed out that the event mostly draws engineers and business leaders, but then, numerous delegates offered to help pass along resumes. A talent supply-demand trends report released by Liepin's Big Data Research Institute during WAIC 2026 showed that new AI job postings in the first half of 2026 climbed 21.08% year on year. Yet the demand across roles was sharply divided — algorithm engineers remained the most posted function, but their growth slowed to just 12.84%. By contrast, architect roles surged 76.74%, mechanical structure engineers jumped 57.20%, and hardware engineers gained 40.80%.Behind these numbers lies a shift in the competitive logic of the AI industry. The halls were shoulder-to-shoulder, booths were swarmed, every dialogue risked interruption, and every resume handed over risked drowning in a flood of information."On opening day, we were definitely stretched thin. Industry networking, product launches, media interviews were back-to-back, and everyone was in 'combat readiness' mode. The second and third days were much better for deeper conversations," a staffer from a leading embodied AI exhibitor told Gasgoo. "Though the public days over the weekend brought massive crowds, making quiet chats at the booth tough. We can collect resumes first, screen them internally after the event, and arrange follow-up interviews later."Notably, however, the conversations on the show floor skewed toward the operational front lines. For fresh graduates looking to dive into technical details, business logic, and industry trends, this was far more valuable than standard HR Q&A. As one industry insider pointed out to Gasgoo: Compared to traditional job fairs, WAIC is better suited for fresh grads because you can directly access the people actually doing the work.Algorithms Haven't Fallen from Grace, but Liberal Arts Grads Are Being RepricedWAIC's transformation into a matchmaking platform was no accident. It reflects the structural mismatch between talent supply and demand in the AI sector.According to Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security estimates, China's AI talent gap exceeds 5 million, with a supply-demand ratio of 1:10. The scale of China's core AI industry has surpassed 1.2 trillion yuan, yet the talent war is shifting from a scramble for technical personnel to a contest for hybrid capabilities.The gap is massive. Yet at the same time, claims that "80% of AI undergrads can't find jobs" sparked heated debate on social media — the industry lacks "the right people," not just "people who studied AI."AI-driven career shifts aren't confined to technical roles, either.
