Bruno Marzi / MEGAThe price of getting your car repaired has risen dramatically over the last seven years by 60 percent.The shocking statistic is partly due to the fact that we have more technology powering our cars.But the spike in prices is outpacing cost-of-living inflation by almost two to one.Federal data shows motor vehicle maintenance and repair costs rose 60 percent between January 2019 and August 2026.According to Autoguide.com, one of the main culprits behind the rising costs is that new cars which have proprietary electronics, software subscriptions and mandated driver-assist hardware built into the vehicles.Newscom/MegaSpeaking to CNBC, auto mechanic Ralph Czeisler explained that most modern car repairs require a laptop and software.He said, "I have multiple computers for domestic, Asian, European cars, and it's very costly. Every year they make changes, and it costs more money and more money. And it's getting very challenging. "It is not just major repairs that have seen big price rises. Routine work like a basic oil change can carry an extra $50 to $75 charge because of the cost of the software license required to reset the vehicle's electronic oil-life monitoring system.With modern vehicles now becoming rolling computers, neighborhood garages have to invest heavily in specialized software and calibration gear, which also comes at a cost to drivers.Some advanced driver assistance technologies are becoming federally mandated.
