In November, BMW announced the Z4 Final Edition. As the name implies, the special edition cars would mark the end of Z4 production for the current generation. Now, that day has come, and without a replacement in sight. The end of the current Z4's run marks the end of production for BMW roadsters (two-seat convertibles) going back nearly 30 years. In a statement to BMWBLOG, a spokesperson convrimed the end of the end of roadster production. The Z4's sales had spiked following the announcement of the Final Edition models, rising around five percent in the first quarter of the year, the first measurable financial quarter since the Final Edition was announced. Z4 sales have been otherwise on the decline. Sales peaked way back in 2019, which marked the model's first full year on sale. Since then, sales have steadily fallen. Demand fell every year since, and BMW sold just 9,744 units in the whole of 2025.BMWEvidently, demand for BMW's two-seat convertible is near-zero, which likely explains why the decision was made not to continue production with a newer generation. The end result is nearly the end of convertibles at BMW. The Brand's final convertible, the 4 Series, is still on sale. However, the brand's drop-top lineup has been cut by 66% with the end of the Z4 and 8 Series convertible production. If you were a fan of the Z4 but couldn't swing a new one, don't fret. The model's drivetrain will continue on in the Toyota Supra for now. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on May 11, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
