A year after the concept model reveal, covers have been taken off the BMW Motorrad F450 GS during the on-going EICMA show in Italy. The F450 GS will come four model variants – Basic, Exclusive, Sport and the top of the range Trophy. According to BMW Motorrad, the F450 GS is an all-new model, developed with a focus to outstanding handling with low weight, superior performance and perfect balance between agility and stability. The F450 GS is focused both for on- and off-road use, featuring the BMW Easy Ride Clutch (ERC), a development of the centrifugal clutch. This eliminates the need to manually operate the clutch lever while riding and applies to all situations, from starting off and changing gears to demanding off-road manoeuvres, engaging the clutch depending on engine speed. The ERC is standard on the F450 GS Trophy variant and available as an optional accessory on other model variants. The clutch lever, however, remains intact and allows the rider to intervene manually at any time if necessary, such as when needing to lift the front wheel or control the engine while riding on slippery surfaces. A newly designed six-speed transmission transmits torque to the left-hand secondary drive via an X-ring chain while a quickshifter is standard in all model variants except Basic, where it is offered as an option. Engine power for the F450 GS comes from a new parallel-twin displacing 420 cc and producing 48 hp at 8,750 rpm with a peak torque of 43 Nm at 6,750 rpm. The engine features a crankshaft with crankpins offset by 135 degrees and, in conjunction with a single balance shaft, features extremely low vibration levels. Three riding modes comes as standard – Rain, Road and Enduro – while a fourth Enduro Pro mode is only available with the F450 GS Exclusive and Trophy model variants. The electronics suite also includes ABS Pro, Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and engine drag torque control (MSR). Suspension is done with KYB upside-down telescopic fork with a 43 mm inner tube diameter, adjustable for rebound and compression. At the rear, a KYB monoshock adjustable for preload and rebound, holds ups the rear, while suspension travel is 180 mm at both ends. Brembo supplies the braking for the F450 GS, with a floating single-disc brake with a Brembo four-piston calliperand a 310 mm brake disc diameter in front and a single disc brake with single-piston floating caliper and 240 mm diameter disc is fitted on the rear wheel. BMW Motorrad ABS Pro is fitted as standard equipment. Wheel sizing for the F450 GS is 19-inches in front and 17-inches in the rear, fitted with 100/90 front and 130/80 rear tyres. BMW Motorrad also supplies spoked wheels as an optional accessory from the official catalogue. An 845 mm tall seat is supplied as standard, while a 830 mm low seat and 865 mm Rally seat are available as options nil accessories, along with adjustable handlebar levers and the optional 20 mm handlebar risers. Riding information is displayed on a 6.5-inch TFT-LCD screen, while the LED headlight features an “X” daytime riding light signature as standard.
