Bugatti Ends W16 Mistral Production as Final Units Leave MolsheimBugatti has wrapped up production of the W16 Mistral, with the final examples of the open-top hypercar leaving the company's facility in Molsheim, France.First shown in early 2024, the Mistral served as an unofficial roadster version of the Chiron, which retained its fixed roof throughout its production run. The convertible body style harkens back to the earlier Veyron, which was also offered without a permanent roof. Bugatti, however, positioned the Mistral as far more than a Chiron with the top removed.Engineers re-worked the carbon fiber monocoque to suit the open-top design, and the car received a new, rounder silhouette. Ultra-high-performance composite materials were used throughout to boost rigidity and keep weight in check, a deliberate effort to avoid the added mass that often burdens convertibles. The model also features a sound system developed specifically for open-air driving.AdvertisementAdvertisementPerhaps most significantly, the Mistral is the last Bugatti to use the brand's quad-turbocharged 8.0-liter W16 engine. The company's newer hypercar, the Tourbillon, moves to an 8.3-liter unit designed by Cosworth that produces 986 horsepower on its own. Combined with three electric motors, the Tourbillon delivers a total of 1,775 horsepower. The Mistral, by comparison, generates 1,577 horsepower and 1,180 pound-feet of torque, with an official top speed of 261 mph. It accelerates from zero to 62 mph in 2.4 seconds and from zero to 124 mph in 5.6 seconds. The Tourbillon covers those same benchmarks in 2.9 and 5.0 seconds.Even with production now over, the Mistral holds the title of fastest production convertible ever built. Late in 2024, with Le Mans winner and Bugatti official pilot Andy Wallace driving, the car reached 282 mph at the Papenburg track in Germany, exceeding its official top speed by 21 mph.Bugatti built just 99 examples of the Mistral, all of which sold quickly. The rare hypercar occasionally surfaces on the used market, where listings often climb above $10 million.SourceJoin our Newsletter, follow our Instagram page, and follow us on Facebook.
