The 2027 Volvo EX60With more safety, more options and accessories, and more range, this all-electric 2027 Volvo EX60 is a great fit for families. For a carmaker that has its roots on the shores of the Baltic Sea, it’s not a surprise that its designs might take on the hues and tempo of the seashore. But adding a crab bucket to a car’s cargo area? For families who like to go crabbing to catch the tiny creatures and then let them go, this is a thoughtful touch that interior designer Lisa Reeves says is a nod to the location of Volvo’s headquarters. And there are more; there’s a ‘will it fit’ graphic that highlights skis and a dog, among other common gear; leatherette upholstery dyes are made from forest-derived resources. An optional waterproof bag can be used to corral wet bathing suits, drinks, or snacks; it was created by a member of the design team who used to create handbags (sign me up for one of those, please). Built on Volvo’s new SPA3 platform, which is made specifically for battery-electric vehicles, it boasts up to 400 miles of range, a gorgeous and streamlined Swedish interior, and innovations like a safety belt that adapts to your size and weight. This story is 100% human-researched and written based on actual first-person knowledge, extensive experience and expertise on the subject of cars and trucks. Additionally I was Volvo’s guest for this test drive but all opinions are my own.Getting Behind the Wheel of the 2027 Volvo EX60The 2027 Volvo EX60 has tons of range for adventuring | Kristin ShawI got to experience these innovations and more behind the wheel of the 2027 Volvo EX60 as we drove it around the city and through the countryside in Spain, and let the next era of Volvo reveal itself on the road. For me, the audio system and smooth one-pedal driving are highlights of the new EX60. Knowing it has the backing of a top-notch safety team makes it that much better. Starting at $59,795 for the base P6 model (up to 307 miles of range) now costs less than its gas-powered sibling, the XC60.AdvertisementAdvertisementMoving up the ladder, the all-wheel drive P10 (up to 322 miles of range) starts at $62,145. After driving both, I didn’t notice a huge difference in acceleration or enjoyment. However, if you live in a part of the country that gets more snow and ice, the all-wheel-drive P10 is a better bet. New Multi-Adaptable Seat Belts for All Sizes and ShapesThe 2027 Volvo EX60 has innovative seat belts for everyone – Kristin Shaw – Credit: Kristin ShawWhen it comes to safety, Volvo has built its reputation on innovations not just for its own cars but for the entire world. In 1959, in-house engineer Nils Bohlin perfected the modern-day three-point safety belt, and then Volvo shared the patent with others. Almost 70 years later, the Swedish automaker has debuted its new multi-adaptable seat belt with even more protection baked in. The multi-adaptive safety belt, included in the all-new 2027 Volvo EX60, adjusts to the driver and the passenger by height, weight, and seating position. Volvo says it has expanded the load limiter—a device designed to prevent a system from exceeding its maximum capacity—which Volvo safety expert Isabelle Stockman says will result in fewer injuries. Using data from exterior, interior, and crash sensors, the car reacts to a collision quicker than you can blink. It’s very important for your hips to stay planted in a crash. On the other hand, the upper body should fold forward in a smooth motion to meet the airbag. The alternative is bad physics. AdvertisementAdvertisement“The belt is a complex system consisting of more than 200 different parts, a lot of them deformable metal” Stockman says. “The new belt has more of those deformable metal parts. And due to that, you can have several different load limiting profiles.” For instance, if the sensors detect a large person, the software will activate a higher belt load setting to prevent head injury. Smaller passengers need less load, or they risk rib fractures. No word yet on whether the Swedish brand will share its multi-adaptable seat belt technology, but I’m hoping others will think about creating something similar. There’s A Well-Appointed, Plush Cabin With a Cranking Audio System2027 Volvo EX60 has plenty of storage – Kristin Shaw – Credit: Kristin ShawStockton says the extra trunk space serves a dual purpose: storage and a built-in crumple zone to keep the EX60’s passengers safe. In a rear-end fender bender, the cargo area deforms and absorbs any damaging energy before it reaches the people inside. Like the Subaru Trailseeker, the Volvo EX60 doesn’t have a glovebox in the usual spot by the front seat passenger’s knees. Instead, Volvo carved out that area for more leg room and weight savings. There is a larger bin in the console between the front and passenger seat that hides away toll tags, wallets, phones, snacks, and important documents with cleverly placed slots and a smaller removable shelf bin. The placement ensures it’s within reach from either side, which is handy. AdvertisementAdvertisementThe EX60 is available in two trim levels: Plus and Ultra. If you want the top-of-the-line 28-speaker Bowers and Wilkins audio system—and I assure you, you do—go with the Ultra trim. My driving partner, Tony Markovich of U.S. News and World Report and I tested it out with a curated playlist designed to show just how sonorous it is. We found it’s just as terrific when listening to everything from calming classical music to energetic punk or pounding rock. Mindful Pampering Is A Top PriorityThe interior of the Volvo EX60 provides tons of pampering – VolvoInside the Ultra, the seats are covered in a sustainable synthetic material called Nordico. It feels like leather but is made with more Earth-friendly materials like recycled polyester and PET water bottles. Every surface is thoughtfully planned and simply beautiful in a way only Volvo can pull off. It’s incredible serene and spacious, and the lines of the layout create a calming effect. After driving both models, I didn’t notice a huge difference in acceleration or enjoyment. However, if you live in a part of the country that gets more snow and ice, the all-wheel-drive P10 is a better bet. Volvo will release the P12 variant later in 2028 on with the top-of-the-line range at 400 miles. Volvo’s suspension is designed for comfort, not sportiness. Still, the steering was responsive and precise on curvy roads and it exhibits an excellent level of body control. The EX60 is built on a “cell-to-body” platform that integrates the battery into the car frame to improve range, space, and weight. Plus, the low center of gravity serves this EV very well.
