2028 Volvo XC40 Gets New Look, More Tech, Hybrid FocusAutoweekMark VaughnThu, September 10, 2026 at 5:15 PM UTCAdd us on Google2028 Volvo XC40 Gets New Look, More TechVolvoVolvo has brightened up the XC40, its most affordable offering, for the 2028 model year, with a new front and rear look and updates to tech and safety features throughout. With the refresh, Volvo essentially skipped the 2027 model year for the crossover and went straight into 2028. That saves money and is something other carmakers have done, too, the Volkswagen ID.Buzz for one. Look for the new model in showrooms starting in early 2027.They had to do something. The Volvo XC40 crossover has been around for a while, since its global debut in 2017, so a refresh, at the very least, was long overdue. It's been almost a decade, after all.AdvertisementAdvertisementSales were in trouble, too. Here in the US sales had slipped from a peak of 28,143 three years ago to 22,852 last year and are on track to hit fewer than 18,000 by the end of 2026.Note the Thor's Hammer headlightVolvoSeparately, Volvo announced it will cancel the similarly sized EX40 all-electric crossover and concentrate efforts in that segment on the refreshed hybrid-powered XC40 you see pictured above. Most of the world's automakers are backing off on EVs after sales of those higher-tech models didn't pan out quite like they thought they would. The XC40 hybrid's refreshed exterior is fairly minimal, as mid-cycle facelifts are wont to be, with a new take on what Volvo calls the "Thor's Hammer Matrix" LED headlights (there's a T shape to them, and Ts are shaped like hammers?), while the grille and front bumper, along with the hood and front fenders, make for a smoother and better-integrated new look.Rear three-quarter view.VolvoThe rear end, meanwhile, also gets new LED taillights and a new bumper. Throw in new 18-inch, 19-inch, and 20-inch "diamond-cut" wheels, and you have yourself an exterior refresh.AdvertisementAdvertisementInside, you'll find a new and larger 11.2-inch screen with Google Gemini AI helping you manage daily tasks and your song list. Volvo says you can have "natural conversations" with the Gemini app.Inside, there are better storage spaces and an updated wireless phone charger. The model we saw at an intro in Europe featured Arianne Cardamom leather upholstery paired with brown ash wood decor elements across the interior. You can also get your XC40 with black ash or aluminum interior trim.Safety has been a Volvo marketing and engineering priority for generations, and the XC40 gets a number of safety improvements for the 2028 model year.New 11.2-inch screenVolvo"The XC40 combines advanced safety technologies to help prevent collisions and protect people," Volvo said. "If a potential collision is detected, the car can respond in real time, warning the driver or stepping in to help avoid or reduce the impact. Whether steering around danger with automatic emergency steering, or braking instantly with automatic emergency braking, it's designed to help choose the safest action in the moment."AdvertisementAdvertisementSpecifically, there are new front and corner radars, a new front camera, new rear corner radars, 12 new ultrasonic sensors and new parking cameras on the car, making it about equivalent to the International Space Station in technology.Among the new tech are things like a new Door Opening Alert that tells you if a bicyclist is zooming up behind you so you don't "door" the poor rider; a better Pilot Assist that allows you to change lanes; and a new 360 camera upgraded to a 3D view that makes parking and low-speed maneuvers easier. Anything not included in the above can potentially be added via over the air updates. The 2028 XC40 is scheduled to arrive in dealerships in early 2027, with pricing likely to remain about the same as the current 2026 model, in the low 40s.Volvo had to do something, after the XC40 lost its sales leadership in what's known as the subcompact premium crossover segment to the Acura ADX and BMW X1. A good whack of Thor's Hammer is all it needs.
