Volkswagen on Tuesday night kicked off the 2026 New York International Auto Show festivities by revealing the 2027 Atlas. The next generation of the brand's trusty three-row SUV gets a style overhaul outside and an injection of high-end materials and tech from the Tiguan, which saw its own move upmarket last year. Familiar Family Styling If you've seen the new Tiguan, the 2027 Atlas will seem mighty familiar, especially from the rear. Here a thin light bar wraps around the tail and runs almost the length of the D-pillars, with inner lighting elements that look like the vintage audio equipment equalizer displays. Squared-off wheel arches and a strong rear shoulder line are further visual ties to the Atlas' baby brother. Where the three-row starts to differentiate itself is up front, with an equally strong crease above the front wheels carrying on a motif from the previous model. The nose houses stacked headlights-another nod to the outgoing model-with a similar grille shape as before but now bisected by a trim insert and the now-common twin light bars. Those bars as well as the light-up badge are standard on every Atlas bar the base trim. Similarly, only the entry-level model rolls on 18-inch alloys; everything else is sitting on 20s or 21s. Upmarket Vibes Inside Image: Volkswagen Image: Volkswagen The Tiguan comparisons only strengthen inside the '27 Atlas cabin. Volkswagen has seemingly rediscovered the elevated-mainstream feel that used to mark out its cars, with a high-end look that challenges the likes of the Mazda CX-90 and Hyundai Palisade. A simple dashboard design utilizes a distinctive loop shape for visual depth, and is lined with real wood in all Atlas trims. The edges extend slightly into the doors, which now feature curved upper sections for an even more spacious feel. The center console maintains the large lower storage area of the current model, with a rejigged upper level handling the Atmospheres selector and dual wireless chargers. The shifter has now migrated up to the steering wheel. 2026 Bentley Flying Spure Azure: All the Details Image: Volkswagen Image: Volkswagen There are three color combinations for the 2027 Atlas cabin: a lighter gray, a black and dark gray combo, and what VW is calling a "deep wine." Faux-leather is standard on the base trim, with Varenna and Nappa leathers available further up the trim walk. Image: Volkswagen Image: Volkswagen As in the Tiguan, Atmospheres provides a multitude of lighting and audio presets. Ambient lighting is standard across the board, with higher trims gaining more colors as well as animation which extends to the backlit door panels. Not all the tweaks are visual, either: VW has made practical improvements including B-pillar-mounted air vents, standard rear sunshades, and available second-row ventilation. Second-row captain's chairs remain an option. Higher trims unlock a massage function for the front seats. Other standard kit now includes a power liftgate, auto-dimming driver-side mirror, and parking distance sensors front and rear. A nine-speaker sound system is standard, while a 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup is optional on the top trim. The tech lineup also includes seven USB-C ports peppered throughout the cabin, 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, and a 12.9-inch central display on the base model; every other trim bumps that up to a 15.0-inch setup. VW will include a one-year trial of its generative AI-powered voice assistant for all models. IQ.Drive is also standard, and now features the Travel Assist feature, which allows for "semi-automated hands-on driving capability from 0 to 95 mph" and can execute driver-initiated lane changes. Slight Power Bump Image: Volkswagen Image: Volkswagen The '27 Atlas is just one inch longer than the outgoing model, riding on the same platform, with every other measurement being the same as before. It still uses VW's trusty EA888 turbocharged 2.0-liter too, though it makes fractionally more power than before with 282 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque-an increase of 13 hp. Shifting capability is once again handled via eight-speed automatic, with either front- or all-wheel drive. Volkswagen expects a slight fuel efficiency improvement, and maintains the new Atlas will tow the same 5,000 pounds as the old model. The accompanying press release teases a future hybrid though as it won't arrive until the mid-cycle facelift, it's a few years out. The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas will arrive in dealerships this autumn. Pricing and trim information will arrive closer to launch. AutoGuide's Take Image: Volkswagen Image: Volkswagen This new Atlas looks to address the existing model's shortcomings, with sleeker looks and a welcome style lift inside, not to mention some seriously swanky materials and features. Not much else at this price point offers massage seats, for instance. It's not appreciably larger because the Atlas was one of the most spacious vehicles in the segment. If there is a big question mark, it's the engine, yet another slightly-pumped-up version of the 2.0-liter that has been a part of the lineup since the Atlas debuted. Its outputs are class-competitive, but we wonder how that 282 hp will feel with a full cabin and a trailer. These Are The 10 Safest Car Brands For Day-to-Day Living
