With 40 new models planned within the next two years, the company will be very busy indeed. The company does have momentum behind it following a barrage of new car launches, but the push should help sustain that growth. One crucial model that's just about ready to be revealed is the next-generation X5. As it and the X3 are practically neck and neck in U.S sales, it's important that BMW gets it right. That'll be a tough ask given how good the soon-to-be outgoing model is despite its age. The midsize luxury crossover is expected to make its world premiere by Summer 2026.BMWAlready Shown to DealersAutomotive News reports that the redesigned X5, codenamed G65, had already been shown to dealers ahead of the model's debut. Some of the attendees came forward to the publication to give snippets of what they saw.AdvertisementAdvertisementAccording to those who saw the 2027 X5, it 'appears more compact' than the model it will soon succeed. That said, it may be down to the way the SUV looks, and not necessarily mean it'll be smaller than its predecessor. Attendees also noted that the headlights feature an 'X-motif,' which has already been seen in more recent spy shots.SH Proshots/AutoblogSo Long, Split TailgateDealers who saw the 2027 X5 also noted that the SUV no longer has one of its defining features from the start: its split tailgate. If true, it'll be the first of its kind to have a full-opening tailgate, and we're rather sad to see it go.It's still unknown why BMW might shift to a one-piece tailgate, but the likeliest reason is on cost grounds. After all, split tailgates do require more mechanisms and parts. With that, it seems that BMW is opting for simpler tailgates, as even the 5 Series Touring no longer has an opening glass hatch. This bit of news doesn't bode well for the next-gen X7, either, or any fans of split tailgates.James RiswickWhat We Know so FarBased on leaked specs that surfaced, the G65 BMW X5 will measure 196.6 inches long, 78.7 inches wide, 68.9 inches tall, with a lengthy wheelbase of 119.5 inches. That means it's longer than before and sits on a stretched wheelbase, although width and height are less.AdvertisementAdvertisementFor powertrains, there will be five types on offer, consisting of a variety of gas, diesel, plug-in hybrid, full-electric (iX5), and even hydrogen. Spy shots show that the X5 and iX5 will sit on the same platform, unlike the X3 and iX3, which have totally different underpinnings. As mentioned earlier, the 2027 X5 will be revealed around Summer 2026. Production will commence shortly after and reach showrooms either before the end of the year or early 2027.SH Proshots/AutoblogThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Jun 2, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
