The air temperature is -3F, with a wind-chill-powered "feels like" of -12. Even for a Michigan boy, that's freaking cold. Of course, it's also exactly the point.Alfa Romeo has trucked Q4 AWD versions of its lineup, including the newly updated Tonale, to the icy confines of the ICAR Mirabel track complex, north of Montreal. All of this, in search of a perfect spot for putting the cars and Bridgestone's latest snow tires to the ultimate test.My job today is a bit slippery, even apart from the ice. This environment might be curated for an extreme test of the new Blizzak 6 and IcePeak tire models, but getting "first drive" impressions of Alfa's key crossover is a bit more challenging.Still, if you're considering Alfa's lovely SUV and you live in a part of the country that's prone to go all "polar vortex" every once in a while, read on. (Also, if you're a snow tire fan boi/sicko, we got you.) The New 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale: What’s Hot? 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale wheels A new "trilobe" wheel design and Monza Green paint set Tonale apart from the masses of grey compact SUVs on the market Tonale has a new top trim level, the Sport Speciale, with unique exterior trim and Alcantara-trimmed interior Lively handling will keep one entertained on dry pavement or glare ice If you're aesthetically inclined, Tonale remains one of the more compelling offerings in this subcompact luxury SUV segment. The revised front fascia is said to be derived from the achingly pretty 33 Stradale supercar, but I also detect just a hint of the legendary Alfa SZ around the eyes.In either event, the refreshed version of the brand's iconic telephone dial wheel looks amazing on this little crossover, as does the athletic stance.tonale-3 The company has also updated the interior space, though the results aren't quite so compelling inside as out. The steering wheel and seats are set up for aggressive driving, and I dig the new stitching on the instrument panel and horizontal quilting on the cushions. Still, the cabins of competitors like the BMW X1 and the Volvo XC40 feel more premium and interesting to look at. Is The Alfa Romeo Tonale A Driver’s Car? tonale-1For the driver's car question, I will offer a very qualified "hell yes," at least until I get more seat time in the car on dry roads. As I alluded to at the top, my time in the car was limited to laps of a kind of mini street circuit covered with ice, an autocross besotted with snow (and ice), and an oval loop course slick with, you guessed it, ice.tonale-5 On each of these, the Tonale not only acquitted itself admirably, it was also an absolute blast to slide around for a few hours.I started the day on the road course, and initially didn't love driving Tonale nearly so much as the Giulia and Stelvio, which were also on hand to sample. At first, I assumed that this was just down to the rear-drive bias of those models vs the front-drive bias of Tonale – actually untrue.2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale Engine Specs Let's Talk About How Different Two Kinds of Snow Tires Can Be Bridgestone Blizzak IcePeak Tire on Alfa Romeo Tonale As it turned out, there were two factors at play: One, you need to turn traction control off to get the Tonale to slide predictably and power out of a corner. The SUV will default to understeer if you don't (which is exactly what you'd be hoping for in the real world, but not while playing ice racer in Canada). Two, the Tonale was shod with the much stickier, less performance-focused of the two new Bridgestone tire models we tested, the Blizzak IcePeak. Engineered with what Bridgestone calls "MultiCell" technology, along with deep sipes for plenty of bite, the IcePeak was just incredibly grippy, even on slick ice. Again, if I were taking my kids to school on a January morning or driving across Michigan in a blizzard, this is exactly what I'd want to keep the car aimed in the right direction. The grip to accelerate and stop was almost unbelievable with this tire. However, the IcePeak doesn't love to slide around a corner. The Blizzak 6, while still offering exceptional grip, is focused on performance, and allows for a lot more swing-the-tail-out shenanigans. The Stelvio and the Giulia, meanwhile, were wearing the new Blizzak 6 model. That tire, while still offering exceptional grip, is focused on performance in both snowy and dry situations, and allows for a lot more swing-the-tail-out kinds of shenanigans.Said another way: While I would happily put the new IcePeak tires on my wife's daily driver Audi Q5, there's no question I'd opt for the Blizzak 6s for my WRX. Back To The Alfas… 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale interior Once the secret of the traction control was unearthed, the Tonale proved almost as much fun as its rear-drive-biased siblings out on the ice. Steering was responsive and well-weighted, and the car offered a neutral balance that made it confidence-inspiring while whipping through orange cone gates or trying to set up perfectly for a big slidy sweeper of a turn.In terms of powertrain, well, it was hard to get a sense for it given the conditions. The Tonale's 2.0T four-cylinder makes 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, mated up to a nine-speed automatic transmission. That power should be enough to pull the Alfa to 60 miles per hour in under six seconds, though I'll need a test of the car in balmier weather to report thoroughly. How To Build The Alfa Romeo Tonale The Right Way 2026 Alfa Romeo Tonale front end While the new Sport Speciale trim looks very good, I'd recommend saving some cash for snow tires and look at the Veloce trim. In that form the Tonale gets adaptive dampers, bigger wheels, and a slightly snazzier interior. Please paint mine in the Verde Monza green shade, too. It's an extra $695 option, but it might be one of the best greens available in the car world today. (Though, honestly, Alfa's color palette for Tonale and all of its models is so vibrant, you almost can't go wrong unless you go black or grey.) HotCars Take: Love It, Leave It, or Mod It? tonale-4 If it's not clear already, I love both models of Bridgestone Blizzak rubber that I sampled at Mirabel. I'm also a lifelong promoter of investing in good snow tires, and I've spent my own hard-earned money on previous Blizzak models. If you live in a winter climate, this is one mod worth budgeting for.And I suspect that, given the overall sweet handling profile of the Tonale, bookending the winter tires with a proper set of summer performance rollers is the way to go, too. I know there are some good all-season options out there, but it's more fun to change your rolling stock like you switch over your wardrobe when the calendar flips.
