Modern touring bikes are among some of the most expensive motorcycles on the market. With customers looking for more luxury features, manufacturers have been forced to pack their bikes with as much tech as possible, or risk getting left behind. Naturally, this kind of “progress” means prices keep going up.For some, the extra outlay is worth it, but for others, these bikes are just out of reach. One option is to consider something a little less luxurious, but even middleweight tourers start at around $10k these days. The vast majority of these decade-old used bikes can be found for under $10k, with a few unique exceptions that arguably offer even more value, even though they cost more.Buying a used motorcycle always has an element of risk attached, so please do your research and proceed with caution. 2016 Kawasaki Versys 650 Price Range: $3,000 - $5,000 Kawasaki The Versys 650 is one of those new middleweight bikes you can have for just over $10k. If you are willing to consider a used model, it will only cost half as much, and it certainly won’t be half the bike. You will forgo a warranty and a handful of nice-to-have features, but if all you need is a comfortable bike that can handle both long multi-day trips and the daily commute, this is still a great option. 2016 Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Price Range: $7,000 - $9,000 Bring a Trailer If you are after a sport tourer that is a little more “interesting,” the 160-horsepower Multistrada certainly offers a lot of bang for the buck at this price point. While Ducati had gotten on top of most of the reliability concerns by the time the Multistrada 1200 came out, this particular model is not without its quirks. The variable valve timing that Ducati added to the platform in 2015 gave the engine a strange flat spot at around 5,000 RPM. It certainly is not a deal-breaker, but it annoyed people enough for Ducati to overhaul the platform once more in 2018. 2016 Kawasaki Vulcan 1700 Vaquero Price Range: $7,000 - $9,000 Kawasaki Metric baggers have gone out of fashion these days, and the Vaquero is one of the few big-bore options still on the market. It costs $20k, but if you are willing to consider a used option, you can find these bikes for less than half that amount. Since its inception, the only thing that has changed is its color, so you won’t really be missing out on anything in that regard. 2016 Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring Price Range: $8,000 - $10,000 Moto Guzzi The other metric option, which has been out of production for quite some time, is Italian. It certainly doesn’t have the most original design, but as long as you like this particular aesthetic, that won’t matter much. Its transverse V-twin adds a little Italian charm to the platform, but even though these bikes were well-built, they were never popular and are a lot harder to find than the aforementioned Vaquero. 2016 Kawasaki Concours 14 Price Range: $8,000 - $10,000 Kawasaki The Concours 14 is one of the few motorcycles in existence that can reliably accumulate well over 100,000 miles. This is largely down to the fact that it has a detuned ZX-14 engine, which will pretty much go on forever. Higher mileages are to be expected, but as long as basic maintenance has been taken care of, that is not much of a concern. 2016 Yamaha FJR1300 ES Price Range: $9,000 - $11,000 Yamaha Much like the aforementioned Concours 14, comfort and mechanical reliability are a given with the FJR1300. But the main reason why you would be looking at one of these bikes is because of its electronic suspension. Unfortunately, while it certainly adds to the convenience and comfort of the bike, it is also a known failure point and is an expensive fix. A good test ride will be important here, and if the suspension doesn’t work as it should, you will have to walk away. 2016 MV Agusta Turismo Veloce 800 Price Range: $9,000 - $11,000 Now, this might be something of a contentious inclusion. Up until very recently, these bikes were only losing value, understandably, but prices are now on the rise. This beautiful motorcycle offers an amazing balance between performance and practicality, if it has been taken care of. Unlike the other bikes on this list – yes, even the Ducati – which can all take a little abuse, the MV simply cannot. The more highly strung sportbike was prone to valve float, and while this is in a more mild state of tune, it is a bike that you redline at your own risk. 2016 Harley-Davidson Street Glide Price Range: $11,000 - $13,000 As a rule, Harleys tend to hold their value pretty well. In the last couple of years, with new bike sales in the toilet, this rule has also been broken. While this generation of the Street Glide is a little toothless compared to the new bikes, the aftermarket is abundant, and it won’t need that much investment to get over 100 horsepower. But if you just want a reliable mile muncher, leaving it as close to stock as possible will be in your best interests. 2016 Honda Gold Wing GL1800 Price Range: $13,000 - $15,000 The fifth-generation Gold Wing was reaching the end of what was a long production life. It was so stable and quiet on the road that Honda elected to give the 6th generation a little less wind protection simply to make it feel more like a motorcycle. Suffice to say, this is a comfortable touring bike, even by modern standards. A decade's worth of wear should, in theory, also make it feel a little more like a motorcycle! 2016 Motus MST Price Range: $18,000 - $20,000 Motus The price listed here serves more as a guide than anything. The Motus MST was always a niche model, and pricing for used examples can range from $10k to $30k depending on the condition. You can actually still find these bikes with ultra-low miles, which is a little sad, to be honest. It really is an incredible bike that you would buy for its engine alone. Its transverse pushrod V4 is engineered to feel like a Chevy small block V8. The rest of the bike is also put together with top-shelf components, and each customer (for better or worse) was able to add a degree of input while the bike was being hand-built. To the right buyer, $30k is reasonable, so if you get one for under $20k, it is a genuine bargain.
