Gotion High Tech has announced a breakthrough in its SSB cells. Image modified by CarNewsChina. At the 2026 World Manufacturing Convention in Hefei, Volkswagen-backed battery maker Gotion announced breakthroughs in producing its solid-state batteries (SSBs). It also published commercialisation benchmarks and is aiming for an energy density of 400 Wh/kg and pricing of 150 USD/kWh. Gotion’s event at the 2026 World Manufacturing Convention. The firm says it has continued work to ready its Jinshi (Gold Rock) SSB cells for real-world commercialisation, including safety testing. Gotion says its SSB cells have endured “extreme testing scenarios”, including puncture and high-temperature evaluations. It claims the new cells produced neither smoke nor flames, proving that safety and energy density can coexist in SSB cells. Potential pricing and specs The battery maker has also disclosed its financial aims for its new cells, with the ultimate goal of bringing SSBs into the “one-yuan era”, referring to the benchmark of 1 yuan/Wh. This is equivalent to 150 USD/kWh, more than double the current average price of LFP cells in China. Gotion has also renewed its energy-density claims, saying the new cell will reach 400 Wh/kg. The firm is using a sulfide-based solid electrolyte in its Jinshi cells and previously claimed an energy density of 350 Wh/kg. More on Gotion Founded in 2006 in Hefei, Gotion High-Tech is China’s fifth-largest battery maker with 20 manufacturing bases worldwide. It is also closely aligned with Volkswagen, its largest shareholder. Market share of China’s top 10 battery makers in August 2026. It has slipped to fifth place, and SSBs may be an opportunity to leapfrog competitors. The race for SSBs is heating up, with a plethora of Chinese battery makers and automotive brands announcing plans for trial production and vehicle tests in 2027. BYD has made headlines with its upcoming Yangwang flagship sedan, which may become the first SSB-equipped car to hit the market. Source: libattery.net
