SUV manufacturers like to promise more space, better technology and improved fuel economy, and most are doing a good job. But after spending time behind the wheel of a wide range of new vehicles, three stand out so far this year as particularly strong choices for families who want comfort, safety and everyday practicality.2025 Hyundai Santa Fe Hybrid2025 Hyundai Santa Fe HybridThe 2025 model moves away from its previous rounded appearance to a more angular and suitably commanding presence. Its boxier shape improves interior space and aerodynamics, says Hyundai. Pricing starts at $37,800 for the SEL Hybrid, with the top-tier Calligraphy Hybrid, my tester for a week, coming to $50,657 including options and destination. It's mod-looking, unusual for the badge. Dual 12.3-inch displays serve as the digital gauge cluster and infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a UV-C sterilization compartment for small items add to its contemporary feel. That means you can throw smartphones, keys, sunglasses, glasses, earbuds, AirPods cases, wallets or loose change in there and they will be germ-free afterward.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe higher trims, like my Calligraphy, deliver Nappa leather seats, ambient lighting and a panoramic sunroof. The available premium Bose 12-speaker sound system is rich and punchy.2025 Honda Pilot2026 Honda PilotThe Pilot doesn't try to clobber you with gimmicks - instead it focuses on doing everything well. The V6 engine provides strong, predictable power, and the ride remains composed whether you're commuting, taking a weekend road trip or loading up a set of drums.Honda's reputation for thoughtful ergonomics continues here. Controls are easy to understand, visibility is excellent and passengers in all three rows have plenty of room. Cargo capacity is generous even before folding seats flat. Families looking for long-term dependability will appreciate Honda's consistent track record, and it's not bad looking, either. The 2025 Honda Pilot starts at about $42,000 and climbs to around $56,000, depending on trim and options.2027 Kia Telluride2027 KIA TELLURIDE NAMED BEST THREE-ROW FAMILY SUV BY THE NORTHWEST AUTOMOTIVE PRESS ASSOCIATION (NWAPA)For 2027, the Telluride is all-new. It's longer than before, rides on a longer wheelbase, has more cargo space behind the third row and adds more room for passengers - adults, too, not just the kids or Fido.AdvertisementAdvertisementThere are a variety of trims, but the X-Pro SX-Prestige tested uses a standard gas engine - a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 274 horsepower and 311 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. That engine replaces the previous Telluride's V6, and while some traditionalists may miss the sound and smoothness of six cylinders, the new turbo four gives the X-Pro useful low-end torque.I had zero problem making the vehicle giddyap when needed, and one does not blast this ride around. You can't, with 4-cylinders. Yet it never feels dinky. Quite the opposite - you turn your head to look in your blind spot and it seems as though your rear window is a mile away. That's an SUV for ya.Fuel economy for my AWD X-Pro version is 17 mpg city, 22 highway and 19 combined. The X-Pro SX-Prestige starts at $56,790 before destination. Depending on options and accessories, it's around $59,580.This article was originally published on Forbes.com
