Vision BMW Alpina Imagines a Stunning Grand TourerBMW Alpina (BMW Alpina)For more than half a century, Alpina was an aftermarket brand that specialized in turning existing BMWs into grand tourers. That all changed when BMW acquired the company in 2022, bringing the entity in-house with an unknown plan. Brand leadership recently revealed that the idea is to turn the newly-minted BMW Alpina into a dedicated up-market subbrand with its own cars—and now, we have a concept to show us just what that might be.BMW Alpina (BMW Alpina)The appropriately-named Vision BMW Alpina is the result of what happens when BMW gives its new subsidiary free rein to build its grand touring, well, vision from the ground up. It is being called a "one-of-one" design study by the company, but the complete lighting package, conventional mirrors, and shared interior parts from the updated 7-Series make this particular study look quite production-ready.Golden lighting accents around two kidney grille-shaped cutouts lead a bold front end, which integrates BMW's current design language with two bar-shaped DRLs above an enclosed headlight structure. The stunning blanked-out kidneys themselves leave little room for air to actually get into what seems to be an internal combustion powertrain, but the design would be unmistakable on the road, and could make an ideal corporate face for a family of dedicated BMW Alpina models.BMW Alpina (BMW Alpina)Wide fenders and big, blocky wheels give the Vision BMW Alpina the imposing road presence it needs to match up with its potential rival, the Bentley Continental GT. Pillarless windows and a glassy roof complete what should be a particularly airy cabin for a modern car, even with a relatively high beltline. Tail lights are divided into two horizontal bars on either side, leaving room for separate BMW and Alpina badges rather than connecting in the middle.BMW Alpina (BMW Alpina)Inside, four seats with U-shaped headrests seem to be spaced out far enough that four adult passengers could actually fit comfortably in the car. A two-tone interior, divided starkly a line below the beltline, integrates the new four-spoke steering wheel from Neue Klasse EVs and the dual-screen setup from the updated 7. It all looks very high-end, but it also looks like it shares parts with current production BMWs in a way that might make production relatively easy.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe total package is more like the first 8-Series than the most recent BMW coupe of the same name—a design-first grand tourer that puts elements from more common BMWs into a unique package. If something like this were to enter production, it could sit comfortably in between the usual BMW machines and the Rolls-Royce lineup as a distinct car unlike anything else the larger corporation makes today.BMW has not confirmed production plans for the stunning concept, but it has revealed plans to build something under the BMW Alpina brand. That model, which BMW describes as "inspired by the BMW 7-Series, but unmistakably BMW Alpina," is coming next year. Given that description, it could be a successor to the previous-generation Alpina B7 and a direct competitor to the Mercedes-Maybach S680.You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
