Rising oil prices also resulting in higher oil change costsWQADCory McIntyreUpdatedWed, September 16, 2026 at 10:19 PM UTCAdd us on GoogleRising oil prices also resulting in higher oil change costsAs oil prices continue to climb, drivers could also see higher prices when it's time for an oil change.Addy Ebberson, a service consultant with Eriksen Chevrolet in Milan, said customers are already seeing an increase compared to a few years ago."I know it's probably been about $10, $15 compared to oil changes probably a couple years ago," Ebberson said. How much more drivers pay can depend on the vehicle.AdvertisementAdvertisementSmaller vehicles typically require less oil, meaning the increase may be around $5 to $10. Larger vehicles require more oil, while diesel engines can cost even more because they require specialized oil."We really haven't seen too much of a difference in your smaller vehicles," Ebberson said. "The bigger a vehicle you have, the more oil it's going to take."The higher costs can sometimes catch customers by surprise."The main problem that we kind of run into is just honestly the customer reaction to the increased price in oil," Ebberson said. The dealership said it tries to absorb some of the additional costs rather than passing them entirely on to customers, but there is only so much it can do when prices increase.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile a higher oil change price may tempt some drivers to wait longer between services, the dealership said that could lead to bigger problems.Ebberson compared engine oil to cooking oil, explaining that oil breaks down the longer it is used and becomes less effective."It can cause catastrophic engine failure, failure of additional parts in there," Ebberson said. That means putting off routine maintenance to save a few dollars could potentially result in a much more expensive repair down the road.
