Pontiac GTO Judge Owned by Same Family for 56 Years Stolen, Cops Recover It 5 Hours LaterRoad & TrackJoe KucinskiFri, September 25, 2026 at 2:38 PM UTCAdd us on GoogleBeloved Pontiac GTO Stolen, But All Ends WellDayton Police Department / XSome cars are more than just a collection of metal, rubber and glass; they're part of the family. That's certainly the case with this 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge, which has been part of the same family since it was purchased new 56 years ago. So, when thieves reportedly stole the car while its owners were visiting Ohio for a car show, losing the roughly $400,000 muscle car was about more than money. Fortunately, this story has a happy ending.According to the Dayton Police Department, the family in question was visiting Ohio from North Carolina to display their beloved 1970 GTO Judge in a local car show. Then on Monday, September 21, at about 7 am, the Pontiac, the trailer in was stored in, and the GMC Sierra Denali that was towing it was reported stolen. The victim's father bought the car fresh off the dealership lot back in 1970, so it was a rather heartbreaking loss.Fortunately, the heartbreak didn't last long. At around 11:30 a.m. that same day, detectives recovered all three vehicles, less than five hours after they were reported stolen. Police didn't say whether the Pontiac, truck, or trailer suffered any damage, but judging—no pun intended—by the smiles in the photo shared by Dayton Police on X, the GTO appears to have made it through the ordeal just fine.Dayton Police Detectives recover a rare 1970 Pontiac GTO Judge worth more than $400,000. pic.twitter.com/cYDTkJkj9D— Dayton Police Dept. (@DaytonPolice) September 22, 2026The Dayton Police Department's statement doesn't explain how detectives tracked down the vehicles, or provide details about arrests or charges related to the theft. We'd certainly like to see those responsible be brought to justice, but getting the vehicles back quickly and unscathed is certainly a win. A $400,000 GTO Judge would be painful enough to lose; a GTO Judge that your father walked into a dealership and bought new more than half a century ago is something you simply can't replace. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
